IMHO I would say the cheapest brand name stuff you can get...

Only buy the memory if it comes with a lifetime warranty.
Stick with good brands such as Crucial, Corsair, Patriot, Ocz and Kinston. They maybe a few $$$ more, but its really worth it in terms of getting a good memory card which will be compatible with your machine.

I'm running vista premium 32 bit. I've heard that there is no advantage to running 4 gigs of memory instead of the 3 I have. is that true?

stewsir depends... it was cheaper for me to get 4 GB vs 3 and I get decent 3.5 of the 4.. If you can get it cheaper or same price then do

Well the thing is he currently has 3 gb so he'd basically be paying around 70ish dollars for .5gb of ram. Considering a single 1gb stick is about 20 the cost of upgrading for him is $140 per GB. Not worth it IMO. I went from 2GB to tehcnically 3gb but I bought 2x2 GB of ram even though my board only supports 3 because it was more economical than buying a 1 and 2 GB stick seperately and now if I change computers I have 4GB of ram.

I would stay away from Geil, I have had problems with them in the past, and they usually are not up to par with the other manufacturers.
Stick with Crucial, Corsair, Patriot, OCZ and Kingston if you want good high quality memory.

Yea I'm leaning towards the Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2), 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-6400 memory module
Thanks for all the information y'all supplied me.
