Currently at work I have an older HP/Compaq nx9600 w/ a P4 561 3.6GHz (1MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB), 1GB RAM and an x300
If I had the chance to switch to a newer HP w/ a Turion64 TL-50, 2GB RAM, integrated graphics, should I do it?
I know the P4 is junk and its very hot, gets no battery life, etc. but it is quite fast. I'm just wondering how the Turion64 will stack up. I do a TON of multitasking often having 3-4 Excel spreadsheets, 5-10 RDP sessions, outlook, etc open all at once.
What do ya think?

It will be faster for sure, but if you can spring for a Core 2 Duo it will be an even bigger improvement. The C2D isn't much more expensive.

well this laptop will not be bought... it already is floating around... the person who had it last has left so it is somewhat up for grabs...

this is the X2 TL-50 @ 1.6ghz eh? the X2 has already proven it is superior to the P4s
my cousin has a p4 3ghz laptop, it runs very hot and is quite slow compared to a modern dual core CPU, the TL-50 will probably be a bit faster in normal usage and alot faster in CPU intensive tasks -
take it, the Turion is a much better multi tasker than the p4 will ever be.
and you will actually have battery life.
for excel, there no way a Core 2 Duo will 'beat' a Turion.
maybe in video encoding, but not excel... excel runs well on my ancient celeron.
