Hello, I was wondering people's opinions on the C2D P7350, my HDX 16 came with one. It's clocked at 2.00Ghz @ 1066Mhz FSB.

Not really complaining about it, just wondering if I would see a noticeable speed increase if I went with a P8600, P8700 or even P9x00.

The main reason I'm looking to upgrade is that the P7350 doesn't seem to support virtualization. What would be the best bang for the buck, considering speed increase, battery life, heat etc?

You'll probably see very little difference in power consumption - and thus heat and battery life - with all of those processors as they're all 25W parts. Yes, the P9700 will probably consume a little bit more juice than the P7350 all across the board, but it shouldn't be much more.

Concerning the performance boost, it really depends on what you're trying to do. If you're constantly loading your processor at near 100%, you'll probably see a noticeable speedup going to the P9700 (though probably not the P8600 and P8700 since these are largely just clock speed boosts). If you're just doing the daily Internet and word processing, it really won't make a difference here - get an SSD instead :D

If you just want VT support, and your current processor is otherwise perfectly adequate, I'd just go for a P8400.

Well the P8400 would be good for VT then, as I have no problem with this processor right now other than that issue. Why would I see no performance gain with the P8x00 series over my P7350?

If you don't maximize your CPU usage, then they will operate at around the same speed due to SpeedStep. What tasks are you doing on your laptop?

I do quite a bit of gaming here and there, but I have no problems with performance. I am looking at running server installs in Virtual PC, for testing, education and eventually, actual application.

P9700 would only consume 3W more....

The rated TDP is 3W more, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will always eat 3W more than the P7350. I bet the differences in actual power draw will be around 3W at load, but very small at idle.

Not sure about the HDX 16 but for the DV6 the last listed "P" processor is the P8800.Has anyone got that P9700 working ok when it wasn't in the M&S guide processor list...Wondering here for Bios whitelisting issues.
List on the DV6 goes up to a T9900 but like i say the last P listed is the P8800

don't get the part about whitelisting issues... but if you want performance you gotta pay the price... i would say T9600 is the best bet and cheapest as many ppl here on the forum have upgraded to it...
