I have been having some on and off fps drops in Source games, ie- Day of Defeat Source. I just used CPUZ to check some things out on my CPU. I noticed when the system is in windows the CPU clocks down to 1.6GHZ, when in game the CPU jumps up to 1.99 Ghz, however I alt-tab out of the game and watch the CPU speed... seems the CPU drops back down to 1.6Ghz for a bit then back up to 1.99Ghz, could this be casuing the fps lag issue? Anyone else have this issue and knwo how to turn it off? I think I would just rather have the CPU at 2Ghz all the time instead of using Intels "power saving" mode, like AMD's Cool and Quite , I always turned that off. :p

Speedstep is pretty well evolved and shouldn't cause any lag issues. I personally wouldn't disable it, but if you change your power settings to the performance mode it should stay at full speed all the time.

The FPS-drop is 99% not because of intel speedstep.

If you don't use it as a mobile PC then why not, you have nothing to lose then, as you don't seem to use it on battery + gaming at the same time.

The thing you're describing otherwise about windows, alt+tab while gaming making the cpu go up and down is 100% normal.

For example: The CPU will only use as much power as it needs, so even if it would use only 1.6GHz in some games it means that the game doesn't need more power than that, so even if you'd run the CPU manually at 2GHz that won't increase any performance of the game/application you're using.
