    PATA 7200rpm vs SATA 5400rpm?

    Both 60GB or 100GB. Any experience?

    The difference between SATA and PATA is very little,7200RPM is faster but consumes more power.

    the 7200rpm will be much faster.

    There is little or no difference between PATA and SATA.

    Good info. I thought SATA is much faster since all new laptop switched from PATA to SATA.

    even though the 7200rpm hdd is faster it will result in slower boot up times as compared to a 5400 rpm due to longer spin down times from whoat i have heard

    Implementing SATA in laptops doesn't make much sense, since their performance is nowhere near the sata desktop drives. Maybe will keep future upgrade paths open, but can't say for sure.

    Rotation speed (7200 rpm) always matters more than interface capacity (SATA).

    Interface has minimal speed effect, but there's not much point upgrading. For basic Office, basic multimedia and Internet tasks, a 5400rpm HDD isnt really a bottleneck.

    And the increased power consumption makes them unpractical in portable notebooks.

    It hasn't been proven if or by how much more, a 7200rpm drive wastes more power than a 5400rpm drive.

    Some say that a 7200rpm may perform a transfer in less time, and actually use less power overall than a 5400rpm drive.


    The trick is to turn off things like System restore and Disk Indexing because they drain much more battery.

    That is a fallacy. The power requirements of a 7200rpm HD are about the same as a 5400rpm drive. In fact, some 5400rpm drive actually use more power than a 7200rpm drive.
