I recently updated my old Windows 98 desktop with an ethernet card and put antivirus on it and noticed a bit of a slowdown. Loaded up a XP-esque Task Manager, and it's only got 11 MB RAM free! With Opera/WMP/similar running it gets down to 8 KB. It still runs surprisingly well with that little free RAM, but it's not lightening quick like it was without antivirus. Fortunately it has a free RAM slot.
But newegg is out of PC-100 SDRAM, and the PC-133 is a bit cheaper. It has PC-100 right now, would PC-133 be compatible?
Currently using Avast! antivirus; could switch to Anti-Vir or AVG if those use less memory. Don't really feel like reinstalling Windows.

Yeah it should work without a problem. It will just run at pc-100 speeds, which im sure you already know.

OK thanks. I knew it'd run at the PC-100 speed, just wanted to make sure it was like DDR in backwards compatibility before going ahead and getting it.

If you live in the states, I can ship you a pc 100 or pc133 memory card for pretty cheap. Just PM me if youre interested.

Some old motherboards have compatibility issues with high density RAM chips, just letting you know.... (I dont think it would be a big problem, but if you had to choose between a RAM stick that has memory chips on both sides vs one side, get the one that has chips on both sides =low density).
PC 133 RAM compatible with PC 100?
