Typically, how long can a PC Card slot withstand plugging in and out before it starts to get loose and give unreliable connection?
I am asking because with my 6 year old Sony notebook, the slot started to get loose after just 6 months of daily use plugging in and out (approx 180 times) and this was when the notebook was brand new.
Does newer PC Card still have this problem?

PC Card is actually being replaced with Express Card on newer notebooks. That is way to fast for a PC Card Slot to start loosening up, but if you have put up with the problem for 6 years, you will not have alot a cheap way to get it repaired.

Well my Dell Inspiron 8200 is 6 years old, and I only started using one of the slots last year, for a Wi-fi card. As long as you cover it up with a plastic plug in cover (which came with my laptop) or a piece of rubber to keep dust out, you should be fine.
Although Express Cards are avaliable, most high end peripherals of this type are still in PCMCIA form, such as the Creative Sound Blaster, and various wireless cards. However, the market is moving towards Express Cards, and soon PC Cards may be obselete, but certainly not in the very near future.
