Anyone who knows when PC laptops will feature displays equivalent to the macbook retina display?

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
I hope they don't arrive 'equivalent to the mbp retina display' - I hope they're done better.
I would be guessing within the year (unless Apple has some 'rights' to have exclusive use of these high res screens). -

You will probably get closest with a 13" 1080p IPS display such as that on the Sony Z series and Asus Zenbook series.

Didn't we already have a thread on this?
-
Indeed, we did, but then again, NBR's unofficial motto should be: Our members do the searching so you don't have to.
There is one thing i learned from my time at NBR, people rarely use the search even though it's fixed now (or google for that matter).
Anyways, not for a while as other said and that's actually a good thing if you ask me, read anandtech's review as to how the retina display really brings the GPU in the MPBr to it's knees. ML fixes some of the issues as mentioned in the review, but personally i'd wait until the next gen of mobile GPUs before getting a laptop with a display like that regardless of which OS it's running. -
Windows' horrible DPI scaling doesn't help either. OS X is far from perfect in this regard and Android/iOS are lightyears ahead in comparison, but at least you won't see things like text overflowing the title bar.
I really hope that the new Windows 8 desktop style that's replacing Aero fixes these issues, but I doubt it. -
I've had no issue with DPI scaling at all... (using 100% and 125%, the latter being the default for 1080p laptops when they arrive at your door). If someone's trying to run something like 150% or higher, then what's the point of buying a high-resolution display? For something like that, stick to 900p or 768p native...
-
Even at 125%, you will run into some issues. I had issues with GPU-Z at one point at 125% DPI for example and i recall there were a few other cases where the scaling wasn't perfect.

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
I actually cant believe anand said that, a HD 3000 can handle a 2560*1440 screen, why cant a 650m forced via gfxcard status cant handle the 2880*1800 res? For me its a software issue. Be it drivers or the coding of the various part that give the lag, dock when you chose stacks, safari and thats it as far as I remember where there is lag. -
The aim, at least, is to do exactly that. The increase in high-resolution 13-14" laptops is very promising; it's going to be something I look for when I finally do need to upgrade my Thinkpads.
-
the 650m can easily handle that res for regular stuff but it was the gaming that killed it. the 3000 can support 2k video or 1080p times 2 and the 4000 can support 4k video or 1080p times 4. but they both cant support gaming at those resolutions

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
I know that the 650m can easily support that res, and given that, its basically a software issue. Hell it can game on 2880*1800 with reduced settings on some games.
its not hardware, its software. -
People keep saying that but every time I've tried the search feature it always came up snake eyes. In my experience it's better to just google your query than to use the thing.
-
I still tend to use "site:forum.notebookreview.com (search terms)" on Google, though to be fair I haven't tried out the new NBR search much at all yet.
-
When i said the search, it was meant on a broader scale than just the forum search (although it works somewhat now). How many questions have you guys seen here that can be answered by a simple google search?
Anyways, what i gathered from the anand review was that the problem with the retina display came from how when you're running it at other resolutions, everything is rendered at even higher res then downscaled rather than the default settings. -
None...so far. But when I need to search google will get me there a lot quicker than the site search.
-
Yeah, it will , I still search the site using google as well. Forum search is working, but i've never seen a forum search that was better than google's.
PC laptops with retina equivalent displays?
