    Hi Guys,
Stupid myself! my PC was running when I took it out of my backpack. It was probably there for 30 min. The screen was black, but the PC was still running (HD and Power). I had to shut it down to make it work again though.
    What might have happened?
I wonder if the processor went off but kept the power supply running?
Anything that I could do to test if things are fine? My PC doesn't seem damaged, but I'm worried.
    Thanks.

Well, it overheated and froze. Simple as that.

Let it sit out for a little while, but wait to boot it up until after it reaches a more normal temperature. Also, download HDTune and scan your hard drive for errors...the extreme heat, or your carrying it around while on, could have damaged the drive.

Other than that, there isn't much that could go wrong. Especially since it appears to still be working.

Oh, and check to make sure you didn't melt any plastic parts. I lost a keyboard that way a long time ago.

It didn't necessarily overheat, albeit it may have. I've had instances where I leave my PC on for a period of time with the lid closed (so the screen is off). Then when I come back to it and raise the lid, I hear the sound as to indicate the screen is to toggle on but nothing happens; all I see are the HDD light showing it's active and power light.

What surprises me is that the PC did not shut off by itself. Isn't that the way it works when overheating, or that only happens for the processor?

Ouch so it got no airflow within your bag. Yeah, seems it froze somehow before being able to self-shutdown.

Are you using vista? Because I find that closing the lid sometimes makes laptops do funny things. Maybe it went to sleep, and couldn't wake up. That happened all the time with me before SP1.

Well all is good if the computer still runs.
I had a motherboard die this way when it Windows failed to shutdown and hanged there, I had to go somwhere so I put it in the bag anyway. I didn't realize anything until I got home it was incredibly hot, and the machine was already off. Powered it back up but the screen was garbled.

Lesson learnt. Make sure you shutdown your notebook before putting it in a notebook bag/backpack.

    Yeah I got the lesson.
I set my PC so it doesn't do anything when I close the lid. The PC seems fine, I'm just worried: Should I start saving money for a new one, because it will fail sooner than if nothing would have happened.

If it still runs I wouldn't be worried about it.

whenever my laptop overheated it would gently restart and freeze at the windows logo. i would let it cool for a bit and then it worked. finally, i decided to get a cooler and its been great ever since.
