I refer you to my other thread in the 'What laptop should i buy forum?'. In which, a moderator stated that you can't get PC6400 RAM for notebooks. However over at Zepto you can configure you laptop with 'DDR2 PC6400 - 800MHZ (up to 15% faster)'.

So i'm a bit confused, is it all lies or can you really get faster RAM for your laptop.

Current Merom processors only have an FSB of 667Mhz, so the memory will downclock itself to that speed since that is the limitation of the chipset. I would think that the "15% faster" thing is a bit deceiving unless you plan on overclocking your notebook. However when the Santa Rosa chipset shows up in Q2 of next year, it will have an 800MHz FSB that takes full advantage of PC6400. Until then I can't really see much benefit from getting that type memory.

Oh i see. Thats a bit crap really isnt it? So Zepto are actually saying you can get this faster RAM which they will put in but you can't even use it. Hmmm.

Faster DDR2 RAM won't make a noticable difference because if its higher latencys. Currently, the Merom and Yonaha have a 667 MHz FSB and any RAM faster than that will slow down to that speed as stated.

    As I said, doesn't exist:
And even if it did, as stated, it would automatically downclock to the FSB of the processor, which is 667MHz.

OK i understand that you probably know more about this than me. But surely it must exist, otherwise how can Zepto even advertise that they have it.

What, they just say that its PC6400 and put a PC5400 one in instead?

I acknowledge that the RAM would slow down ot the FSB speed, so therfore there is no point anyway.

It's here in the memory section of the configuration options. Either it's a typo or they have a magic memory factory in back of the store.

Sorry about that, but mach_zeros link does illustrate what i mean, and its pretty much in the config for every laptop in their range.

If its a typo then someone has really got lucky on the keyboard, kinda seems quite blatant to me!? Like HELLOOOOO we have PC6400 RAM and its 15% Faster!

I have e-mailed them yesterday asking about it and detailing why the mods here don't think it exists. Currently i have had no reply.....

    Zepto got back to me and said the following;

"The speeds are indeed up to 667Mhz, but the buffertimes are much shorter which effectively means that the RAM itself works faster than the PC5300. We tested the new RAM and came up with 15% increase in processing time."

It kinda makes sense to me but i just wondered what everyone else thought about this statment. Is he talking about memory lantency?

Question still remains, though. How is it that Zepto has these PC6400 notebook SO-DIMMS and noone else does? I've checked around all the major memory manufacturers like OCZ, Corsair, Geil, and Kingston as well as major parts sellers like Newegg and Zipzoomfly and none of them show it in their inventories.

You can probably get them specially manufactured. Then they overclock the bus. If you're techie enough, I can see it as possible. Heck, they could just run high-grade 667 modules at 800MHz. Who knows.

Good theories. But if true, I would think the latter would be more likely, although it would still be cheating on their marketing since it's not truly RAM manufactured to run at such specs. And I can't see a tiny company like Zepto taking on such an expensive proposition as outsourcing custom memory.

Well it depends what you mean by tiny. I thought that Zepto was the biggest computer manufacturer in Scandenavia. Do they have a desktop line? Perhaps its somthing to do with that.

Well in any case, lets say for example that the RAM did run 15% faster than the 667Mhz (however that maybe). Does anyone think the price increase is worth it?

Tiny as in compared to HP, Acer, Dell, etc. I honestly had never even heard of them until about a month ago.
