Hi, i recently bought a HP DV4230US Laptop and i realized that it didn't have an internal firewire port. I felt that this wasn't a big deal, so i decided to buy a PCMCIA card to compensate for the loss. I installed it into my laptop and Windows XP created drivers for it (i also downloaded some drivers from the CD provided), but once i plug in a firewire device it does not recognize it. When i take the cardbus out of the slot, it is hot, which proves that the cardbus is receiving information.
When i installed it into my brother's laptop (a dell, don't kno the exact model #), it worked perfectly fine. Now, this could mean that i have a compatibility issue, but i rechecked the minimum requirements and my laptop passes with flying colours. Also, my laptop has a Type |/|| port that is 32-bit and 16-bit compatible. So, my question is, is there any way for me to fix this problem? or will i have to dismantle the laptop and replace the slot? Moreover, is there ANY other way of installing a firewire port than the method that i'm trying? Thanks.

What brand is the card? I just bought a generic PCMIA WiFi card... and it didn't work. It would say "drivers not compatible", and beep. I went ahead and returned it, and bought a D-Link with RangeBooster G, and it works like a champ, giving me instant-speed internet. (I have T1 with Linksys Business Router)

the problem isn't the card, cause it worked on my bro's laptop. However, it is a noname combo cardbus, but i doubt that has a lot to do with the problem. Basically, windows XP can recognize the drivers, the only thing wrong with it is that when i plug in devices they won't work. Even though windows can recognize it and say "this device is working properly", it's no use to me if the devices don't work (USB mouse or WEBCAM or DVD BURNER)

Trust me, it could. It's driver compatibility. For some reason, your laptop won't recognize it. I almost garantee it will work if you go back and buy a name brand. Trust me. I just had this exact same problem.
