Notebooks today use PCIe x16, PCIe 2.0 (is this the same thing as PCIe x16?) or is it PCIe x34, if it exists??
The notebook I want to purchase has "ExpressCard/34", what exactly does this mean?
How many PCI slots does the notebook have? What type of PCI slots are they; PCIe x 1? PCIe x 16? etc.

The Express Card slot is the successor to the PCMCIA card slot. These come in two sizes, 34mm and 54mm. See Wikipedia for more information.
The notebook probably also contains mini-PCIe card slots which are used for devices such as the wireless card. These are internal and may not be user-accessible. They may also be already in use.
