As many guys now, I own a computer with this Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset, I mean PM45 and GS45.![]()
The Intel marketing sort the PM45 in "Performance chipset", and they give it to be compatible with Core2Duo (P and T series), and Core2Quad...![]()
BUT in fact, not all computers are really compatible with all the CPU which are listed by Intel, especially Core2Quad cpu.
I want to know the return of experience for all of you who upgraded or tried it on this chipset.
By exemple:
Model: HP HDX 18
orignal CPU: P8700
upgraded CPU: QX9300
WORKS / DIDN'T WORK
Feel free to leave any complementary informations you think important, like it work from the first time, just by swap, or needed some hardware/software modifications to make it work...![]()
Hope that maximum of people will answer![]()

i'd suggest it's down to manufacturers implementation rather than chipset limitation
-
Manufacturer implementation indeed.
I have a PM45 chipset myself, but it would appear that C2Q would not work because the pins require a different electrical layout which was done on a REVISED PM45 chipset months later (Intel messed it up royally because all PM45 chipsets were originally supposed to have been compatible with C2Q and then found out that changes were needed). -
Also there can be BIOS limitations.
-
That's WHY, because of this lack of information from Intel, I would like to create a list of computer, model by model, case by case, of "upgradability".
I don't want to discuss here what could be or what should be.
But I think it will be really usefull to know which computer with the PM45 can or cannot be upgraded to Core2Extreme and Core2Quad... -
Generally, any computer with the option to upgrade to an Extreme or Quad core will allow you to upgrade to one of those yourself. Else, then you will not have support.
-
why would intel made their chipset not to support running on quads?
its the manufacturer...if 14"(or 13") PM45 laptop has quadcore enable..what d'you think it will be?
to make it simple..
SOME 15" support quads
anything goes below it are not supported...
anything goes above it MOST LIKELY to have quad core support
some factors:
thermal capabilities >>> quads are hot cakes , they need machines that can handle amount of heat produced in a very crammed space.
power supply >>> some laptops dont have enough power to pull the quads up... -
Acer 5930G (PM45)
Original cpu : T5800
Upgraded cpu : P9600
Works great. Laptop's cooler. -
Compal JHL90, PM45
Supports any Socket P dual core C2D, including extreme editions. However, it's cooling system is too weak for 44W CPU such as x9100, IMO -
But in datasheets, it's only explained that PM45 can support quads.
That's why I ask, model by model...
As for me. Either the first releases of PM45 was wrong and intel sold them out cheapier to manufacturers for Core2Duo use only.
Or, the manufacturers create 'marketing' series separations by artificial limitations. Perhaps by the Bios or by putting special EEPROM (like HP have) on their computers which say to the bios "if it's a quad, don't star". Because I really don't think that manufacturers spend their time & money to create plenty of different motherboards for each cpu.
But to make it simple... Now we are in pure speculations.
It's interresting but, the facts are much more interresting. -
Effectively, the P series are cooler than T series -
Despite being stated as obvious, if you try to put a quad core into a computer that wasn't designed by the manufacturer to support it, then most likely it won't work. Intel might make the chipset, but there can be many variations of motherboards - just look at desktop manufacturers and all the different models they have. There are many reasons a quad won't work on a certain model. both hardware and software wise. Some do not supply enough power hardware wise. If they do, the cooling system might not be able to dissipate that amount of heat or they might have software blocks from not being coded in the BIOS.

And as you say, it's obvious.
Not precise, not usefull at all.
Anyway.
What upgrade did you make/try on PM45 platform?
P.S.The goal here is not to discuss obvious things, but to be usefull for next persons. To avoid someone to open his computer for nothing and perhaps break it, or give the information that it definitively should work (and if it finally not works, it is probably the CPU which is defective)
Is it bad? -
As for 5930G, i can ASSURE that T9600 and P9600 are viable upgrades. I didn't see higher-range cpus in a 5930G like T9800 T9900 or P9700 till now even if it's possible in theory. -
Toshiba Qosmio G50 will not support Q9100 quad core cpu. swapped from a t5800 and laptop will not boot at all.
-
Model: ASUS F8Va-C1
Original CPU: T9400
Upgraded CPU: T9900
WORKS
-
samsung r522
original CPU: T6600
upgraded CPU: T9600
works
i got good performance -
i'm suprised that the HDX18t can't have a quad core work in it as hp does sell it with quad core... might be BIOS or Motherboard problems...
-
-
ok i didn't read the example part...oops!
-
-
i doubt that's going to be a problem.. HDX18t used to be sold with QX9300... although u couldn't overclock them due to hp locking the PLL... only an idiot would use a QX9300 in a HDX18t

Hi all,
Sorry,a little bit out of the topic .
My chipset (according to cpuz) is GM45/GM47 and my socket is type P 478.
I am searching all over if I can upgrade the cpu on my toshiba l555-10 from P7450 to Q9100.All anwsers i got was just ''you will spoil your warranty'' and ''your mobo MIGHT fry'' gibberish
The question is ; is the chipset Quad core compatible? What else should I keep in mind?
Thank ya all! -
On paper, everything is compatible; your chipset and socket match up. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell if your BIOS supports it other than by trying it yourself.
-
Thank you for the fast reply mastershroom.
Toshibas costumer support really pisses me off, they dont even have e-mail costumer support.and the only way to know about my laptops bios is to ask them,.. -
most manufacturers are like that... if u really want proper answers, u need an online retailer , they give better service than these OEMs... ex. xoticpc.com or gentechpc.com
-
Thanks sean
I ll check them out. -
