lets see...
-- keyboard - twice
-- bezel
-- back part of display
motherboard barely made it past a year -
Dell Inspiron 6000 no problems requiring service due to errors by the system. Errors by the operator are a different issue; luckily, I know how to reinstall the OS through NBR.
-
My Compaq v4000t required 3 trips to service in the first 2.5 months.. of course it was all for the same issue. So far so good with my new dv8000t. (knocks on wood)

gateway 3018gz 1.5 years and zero issues, wife uses it now and loves it.
averatec Ive had for about 4 months, but it was a floor model, so its seen alot of abuse. The manager said it was the original floor model they recieved, so I have high hopes for the frankentec.
my old compaq presario p2 was in and out of the shop alot for the 8 years I had it. -
My trusty Toshiba had a good first year, a bad second year, and a good third year. Second year replacements included: sound card, power brick, both hinges (cracked clear in half... guess I open and close it a bit...)

Asus Z70Va, almost 10 months old:
1) Replaced palmrest/top case cover in attempt to fix creaking/squeaking
2) Replaced LCD screen due to white wavy lines developing
3) Haven't done this yet, but the main battery currently has 61% battery wear which I think merits a replacement!
Not a very good record, but they've all been relatively minor with nothing catastrophic like the motherboard dying. Also, the Asus Canada Service Centre is close to my house and their turnaround is quick. The longest Asus had my notebook was 2 days. For the LCD replacement, I dropped if off at 5PM and they called at 11AM the next day saying it was ready for me to pick it back up. -
Compaq R3000z, 2yrs old. No problems.
Compaq V3000z, 6 days old. No problems.
Acer Aspire 3003wlci, owned it for ~1yr. No problems but I could probably count poor battery life as one of the problems.
Toshiba Satellite A45, owned it for ~9 months. 2 Problems...
1. Hard drive failiure. Sent it in to Toshiba for warranty service. Took them a week and half to replace it and ship it back.
2. Screen hinge failure.First started to wobble and then completely failed. Fixed and sold. -
Good Poll!
I've had HP, Arima, and Dell laptops with some sort of problems in the first year. My company must have 300 brand's of laptops so I have seen a lot. Laptop hard drives seem to be the number one issue.
Still love my laptops!
Edit; yeah right! how about 300 laptops spanning 5 or 6 brands..sorry. -
Excellent idea - I hope it was something to do with the Gartner annual report? Or just a coincidence?
I am glad to report that nothing broke ever on any of my notebooks (I have 3) in last 6 years.
Edit:
Sorry but I forgot the names:
Gericom P III 1200 MHz
Asus M6N Pentium M 1,6 GHz
Prestigio 1590 W (in my sig)
Some of the members of this forum helped a lot in my attempt to make an online database of failures. It is done as my postgraduation studies project and it is close to the end. We have over 180 inputs already. May I kindly ask you to check it and give your opinion on common notebook hardware failures and their effects? It is very simple, and data we gathered mainly from Internet show very good info.
This is the link to NBR thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=56889
Please check http://www.sail.hr/fmea/medbycomp.asp for the results by groups of components.
If you have any new suggestion or opinion on already existing inputs check http://www.sail.hr/fmea/fmea.asp
Thanks in advance, and I thank to all that already participated.
Results are and will be freely available.
Cheers,

Anyone interested in seeing an overall chart for notebook-associated problems should definitely look at Ivan's charts.
Notebook: Sager NP5320 (Clevo M560A)
-No problems since October. -
HP dv8000t received with a bad system fan. The DVD writer has also recently gotten very noisy and unable to read certain discs, I'm sure it's on its last legs as well

My Compaq v2000z was affected by what appears to be a common problem for HP notebooks - a bad cooling system. My problem was that the heatsink wasn't actually bonded to the processor in any way, overheating the processor and requiring replacement of the entire cooling system and the processor itself.
I didn't need any repairs on my Dell I9300, though the speakers blew out about a week after the warranty expired, although my new Logitech X-530's sound a bit better anyways.
Just about everything imaginable has gone wrong with that AVERATEC, but only since the warranty expired: It's now overheating and the battery holds about 0.01 seconds of charge. Glad I got rid of it when I did. -
I've had an HP zx5000 burn itself out THREE times (within two weeks) when it was 8 months old, and that was AFTER I had to replace the 3.5" floppy in it...
Dell i700m stop working after one week and sent it back...
My XPS m140 is starting to have problems with the external monitor display messing up about once a week...I'm afraid to get it fixed for fear of worse problems with a replacement part...
AND my girlfriend has a Dell i9100 whose mobo needed to be replaced, speakers die, and will soon be laid to pasture when she updates this fall. The 9100 is less than two years old, with most of the problems starting at 6 mo old. Oh, I forgot to mention her power brick began to short and almost caused a few fires before Dell agreed to replace it. -
i have (had) an old clevo 5600p, the notebook the very first alienware notebooks were based off of. anyway, i had to send it back once for dead pixels. then again later when i had this really odd lcd problem. there would be weird blue lines stretching vertically on half my screen. it kept it for awhile b/c it was in the middle of the quarter, but then the notebook stopped powering up, and so i had it serviced. i forget what the exact problem was though.

I said no, the only Issue I had the first year was the rubber feet on the bottom of my Inspiron 1100 came off and they just send me like 6 of them for free under warentee, and I'm just about to get my D820 so hopefully thats ok too

I got an old ze5000 that you can set your cat on fire with but it still lives! -
I had a Toshiba Sattellite M50 for almost a year, and did not have any problems at all except for the DVD Rom sometimes don't read a dvd, I just open and close again then it reads. Now I have an Asus for 3months now, still going good.
POLL TIME! - How many required service for there laptop during the first year?
