    I have an HP DV6000 and it wont boot up. It powers on but the screen is blank. There is also no HD activity (light doesn't blink), on top of that, I hear the cd drive spool up and slow down a few times and then it stops. Could this be a bad HD? And if so, which one should I buy, as I pulled it out and the connector looks a little different than the one in my Sager 5760. Any help here? :confused:

    Can you get into the BIOS? If not, remove the memory modules and replace them one at a time. RAM can mysteriously die.

    If you can get into the BIOS, is it reporting the RAM, ODD and HDD correctly?

    If you think the computer is trying to boot from an optical disc, put in a Windows or recovery disk (or a bootable Linux CD) and see if something loads. Maybe the HDD has lost some bootup information and can be repaired.

    Check the HDD type / manufacturer and download their HDD diagnostic utility which can usually be made into a bootable CD. Then you can boot from that and test the HDD.

    The difference you are seeing on the HDD is probably the connector. Older HDDs use a Parallel ATA connector (2 rows of 22 pins) while the latest HDDs have Serial ATA (a flat connector with contacts on the side).

    Hey, guys.

    I had a very similar problem several years ago. Here's what fixed it:

    Remove the battery and AC adapter from the laptop. Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds. Reinstall the battery and connect the AC. Try to turn on.

    I know it sounds simple, but you have nothing to lose my trying it. Hope it works for you!

    Hi everybody,

    Quick update as Ive just received my laptop back from HP.

    repaired under warranty, took just over 4 weeks, seems ok now. The service sheet shows replacement of System Board and CPU. I had been checking in and at one point only one component had been replaced and they then had to order up the other, not sure which was tried first.

    My laptop didnt fit the serial number range or fault list on the recall notice. http://www.daniweb.com/forums/showthread.php?p=426570&posted=1

    Mine had flashing leds for a second or to with momentary access of HD and CD drives, fan runing for a second or so.

    I think mione was a hibernation issue and I am sure this is the one of the problems with the DV ranges from the dozens of posts on the net.
