    Hi,

The motor on my DVD drive is dying and I will soon be upgrading to a new laptop, so as a temporary thing I'm wanting to connect a DVD player to my laptop to watch DVDs on the laptop screen.

I thought I could do this with a Scart to S-Video adapter, teamed with an S-Vid to S-Vid cable. But this doesn't seem to be working. The adapter has a multi-directional switch which I've tried both ways. On my laptop itself I think the S-Video output thing is Fn + F3 (Fn + F4 which I've seen suggested elsewhere is my wireless) which I've tried four of five times with each adapter direction and although the laptop screen quickly flits black, the normal desktop display is all it shows.

Obviously what I'm doing isn't the right way. I think the laptop model is Packard Bell ED1.

Here are the cable and adapter I'm using.

I've found loads of threads about getting the laptop to display on TV, but you understand I'm trying to do the opposite - getting a DVD player to display on my laptop screen.

I got this far through guess work and internet searches, so any further suggestions would be great if walked through in simple stages...

    Many thanks,
    Georgina

You could replace the internal optical drive for pretty cheap.
The dvd rom optical drive is removable, and you will be able to buy a standard optical drive to replace it.

You could also get an external optical drive inclosure, and install a standard desktop optical drive.
You can then just plug in the usb, and put the cd in, and you will be able to play dvd movies.

I dont know if what you want to do will work, I have never had this problem before.

The S-Video port on your laptop is S-Video out, not in. You will need a TV Tuner to be able to use the laptop display.
