    Hi,
    I have a sony vaio VGN notebook. I shrinked the hard disk into 3 partions. Partition 1: Drive C, with OS vista;
    Partition 2: Drive C, with OS Win XP, SP2;
    Partition 3: Drive E, Local drive for backingup my notebook.
    I tried to shrink the hard disk for one more partition to be used for my own files but unfortunately I failed. a message was prompted telling me that I have exceeded the maximum allowable partitions.

    Could you pleased help me to get extra partition to my hard disk?
    Thanks,

    What partitioning utility are you using?
    Have you tried gpart, or partition magic?

    I would assume that you can make more than 3 partitions on a harddrive, I do not see any reason why one cannot

    K-TRON,
    Many thanks.
    Drives C, D, E are partitions. C & D for OSs of Vista & XP respectively, while drive E for backing up my notebook;
    Drive F: Reserved by windows Vista for Memory stick;
    Drive G: Reserved by windows Vista for SD/ MMC;
    Drive H: Reserved by windows Vista for DVD RW Drive.

    I used "DISK MANAGEMENT" as a method for partitioning drives D & E.
    When I tried to shrink the Hard Disk, a message said that I have exceeded the maximum % allowable partitions.
    I have not tried "gpart" or "partition magic".

    What do you think? gpart or partition magic will solve my problem despite of the OS of vista prohibited it?

    Your help is appreciated.

    What do you think? gpart or partition magic will solve my problem despite of the OS of vista prohibited to shrink additional new partition?

    Your help is appreciated.

    I have 4 partitions in my VAIO. One for Vista, one for Windows 7, one for Ubuntu, and one for recovery stuff.

    Do smaller hard drives limit the number or partitions? That would be my only guess. How big is your hard drive?

    Be careful with partitioning using partition magic I've heard that it can screw your HDD for good if not properly partitioned.
