I am going to buy an 240GB SSD

I heard people saying patriot is better than ocz vertex 3 max iops in some ways such as updating firmware without taking out or booting to the second drive.

intel and crucial using the same tech

while samsung 830 using their own tech but the same layout and component type as intel and crucial but newer

a good way to think about this is that all the drives are more than fast enough, therefore, go with the cheapest option.

here is my prority list based on my observations so far (both the performance and the reliability considered):

    1- Intel 510
    2- Samsung 830
    3- Crucial M4
4- Patriot Wildfire (don't know much on this drive, should be pretty rare)

    Mine would be:

    1. Samsung 830
    2. Crucial M4

Intel 510 is overpriced and Patriot Wildfire has a SandForce controller both scrubbed off the list.

Price difference between the Samsung and Crucial 256GB units is $45 as of today.

So, the best unit for you may just depend on the value to you of the other stuff in the Samsung kit. For example...if are you replacing a HD with the SSD as the primary drive of a system and have to clone the HD data to the SSD.... do you need to transfer data to the SSD while your current HD is still in your laptop... would you prefer the SSD software in samsung Magician versus DIY... etc?

IMO, when it comes down to deciding between the M4 and the Samsung 830, the decision is dependent on the value of what else comes in the Samsung box. YMMV.

^^^ Agreed with the above. Both the Samsung and Crucial drives are awesome in their own right.

Have you looked at the OEM versions instead of retail? OEM versions only come with the drive, and not the transfer cables (software might still be there, like it was for my OEM Intel 320), and thus will be cheaper.

    Samsung 830 or Crucial M4.

I would get the Samsung though. Even though it costs close to $50 more, it comes with newer technology, better software, better hardware kit, Norton Ghost and a free copy of Batman Arkham Asylum. Just getting the game is worth it in my opinion.

I looked at pricing for the Samsung 830 bulk drives and strangely(sadly) they are not much cheaper than the kits. In most cases only $10 or less.... and the stuff you get in the kit is worth alot more than that, IMO.

I'm using a Patriot Wildfire 120 GB and it has been performing great so far. Mine came updated with the latest firmware and blows the competition out of the water. It has proven to be reliable and stable on the SandForce controller so far.

    Here's a helpful little resource. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-nand-reliability,3021-6.html
