Ok so I've been looking around at various new notebooks and I'm getting lost.

The one I have just purchased and am awaiting delivery of is listed as having a Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8400 Dual Core Processor (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB).

From that how can I tell if it's Penryn, Centrino 2 or Montevino (I'm assuming they're all the same but I am totally lost) or something else entirely?

Please could someone explain to me what CPU that is exactly and and why it has a P in front of the number 8400 whereas most other C2D cpus have a T before the number from what I've seen?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

The P in front of the 8400 means socket P. Yes it's a Penryn on the Montevina platform.

The P8400 is a Penryn processor, while the Centrino 2 label is an umbrella term that refers to a laptop with an Intel CPU and Intel wireless chip.

As for the Montevina platform, I am not sure as I haven't read up on it yet, but I'm sure that someone else can answer your question. :)

That processor is part of Centrino 2 (aka Montevina), which is an Intel platform. A combination of several parts as Bog said.

Penryn is the codename of the 2nd generation Intel Core 2 Duo processors. T8100, T8300, T9300 and such are examples. Merom was 1st generation. I'm guessing there's a P in front instead of a T because of the new platform? It's still penryn processors as far as I know.

P series CPUs have a lower TDP of 25W compared to earlier peryn's 35W.

Er forgive me for not understading that.

At least I know now I'm getting a latest generation CPU.

It means that the new P series will run cooler and consumes less energy and longer battery life. :)

The P is a new type of thing....It refers to the medium-voltage CPUs which are socket P (ZIF)....and it fills up the gap between the standard voltage C2Ds (socket P, M) and the low voltage C2D CPUs (FCBGA6)....
    Txxxx(standard V) ~ Pxxxx(medium V) ~ Lxxxx(low V)
