I am going to be buying a new laptop soon and am trying to decide on the best processor speed. If I am keeping this new laptop for around 3 or 4 years, with the possiblility of upgrades during that time, is it worth the extra $100-150 to buy a 2.13 GHz PM over a 2.0 GHz PM? I will be gaming and doing schoolwork on this computer.

A 2.0 should be good enough. Most of the time when gaming or doing intensive programs the processor is not usually the bottle neck. For $100-150 I would try and get some new RAM...aftermarket from like Newegg.com or a better video card if you plan on gaming.

    Hope this helps.

If you really want to "future-proof" your computer and you have the ability to wait, you might want to hold off for a Yonah or a Merom.

Well, Yonah is already out, but you'll have to wait awhile before it becomes more commonplace. The difference between the 2.0GHz and 2.13GHz is so minute, its not worth getting the higher clocked CPU unless you're doing intense work. More RAM and a faster HD will impact performance more than if you got a faster CPU.

Not worth it, I would suggest a 7200RPM hard drive or an upgraded RAM.

    2.0 baby, that's what I have.

I haven't checked current prices on cpus but I'm pretty sure the mobiles are still similar in price now as they were when I bought mine.

I figured the 2.0 was the best bang for my buck comparing the price differences between all the different processors.

At that time the jump from 2.0 to 2.13 was too expensive. I bet it still is. The jump from 1.83 to 2.0 was perfect so I went with it.

You won't need the extra bit unless you're doing something like programming or cad work or something cpu intensive.

I got the 2.0 also because I wanted something around 2.0ghz to match my desktop.

    Cheers,
    Mike

On my z60m, I notice no difference locking my cpu down at 1.06mhz for games as the video card does most of the work. Any difference is pretty laughable.

I also vote 2.0GHz. The price difference vs. performance gain is not logical to go for it.

And by the time that a 2.0 becomes too little, the 2.13 will also be just as slow.
