Pentium M 2Ghz vs Core Duo 1.66 Ghz - Which one is better ? And by how much ?
How much more you pay extra for the desired processor ?

For single core applications they are about the same. For dual core the Pentium M cant come close ofcourse.

The Pentium M uses less power.

For single Core apps the Core 2 Duo still blows the Pentium M away, clock speeds aren't everything (although thats how the pentiums operated, the higher clock speeds would make up for its other inefficiencies)

    Its core duo, not C2D

Oh, woops, my bad, still, the Core Duo is more efficient than the Pentium M, but if you're looking at the prices, then in this range a Turion would be a much better buy

I'm looking at buying used laptops, and was comparing core duo and pentium M laptops.

I won't buy both of them. Core Duo is basically just two Pentium M. Core 2 Duo, that is a lot of difference. But I might still go with Core Duo with lower speed, although some programmes don't support dual-core

I would buy a laptop with a Turion X2, rather than one with a Pentium M. They are both similar prices.

I disagree. The C2D is just 64bit. It terms of processing power in real wrold applications, the performance is almost identical. Most programs are still 32bit, and most versions of MS Vista shipping with Windows are still in 32bit, so you will see little benefit using the C2D over the Core Duo in current applications.

Well, at least C2D is futureproof compared to Core Duo. That is what I like: future-proof. Although I would prefer a 32-bit OS, I also want to dual-boot with 64-bit.

In regard with AMD Turion, compared to the outdated Pentium M, I'll disregard my brand loyalty and go with Turion X2

Evey core 2 processor can easily beat any pentium

Not certain if that's true, a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo might have trouble against a 2.33GHz Pentium-M on single threaded applications.

In terms of comparison, Dual Core offers better multitasking, so if you tend to have a few applications open at once Core Duo or Turion X2 would be good choices. If the notebook is intended primarily for games then this is not so much of an issue, but only the 2GHz+ Pentium-Ms would be competitive in today's environment.

I would recommend either Core Duo or Turion X2.

Dual core processor are standard nowadays, given consumer demands for more processing power. Single core, while still powerful, will show their weakness soon. As a rule of thumb, get a dual core processor.

I have both a P-M 1.86 & a CD 1.66. The CD is faster while doing virus scans(Avast or Spybot). The P-M also seems to be slower on bootup as well. Other points -most CD can be upgraded to C2D as well;the T2300 has higher FSB and can use faster ram too.

I won't consider the P-M unless it has much better components - GPU/HDD etc.
