Hi guys,
I know your able to upgrade the CPU in some notebooks but i was wondering if your able to upgrade to the next CPU family..... Like Banias >>> Dothan or Dothan >>> Sonoma .... I know that Changing family like P-M to P4 is a no go zone due to the change in pin outs. Does that apply to my situation? If so, will the chipset beable to support the new processor? :centrino:

I have heard that it's possible to overclock a Dothan processor on a sonoma motherboard so I'm fairly sure that those two families are compatible. I also know that the Dothan processors are pin to pin compatible with a Banias, so those are probably compatible as well. However I'd be worried about placing a newer processor into an older motherboard since even if it fits and runs the motherboard was never meant to accomodate the new chip and thus may overheat or have some other unforseen problem. For example the dothan chips have a higher thermal design than a Banias so popping it onto a Banias motherboard may cause your comp to overheat.

Thanks, for the info.... So what your saying is that i can put a Sonoma into my Dothan Motherboard using the Intel 855 Chipset..... Would that run at all? or would it be a kill for the motherboard?

No, I don't think you can put a Sonoma processor in an 855GM motherboard; the bus is wrong, and there will be definate heat issues. The Sonoma cores (labelled 7n0 rather than 7n5) are not designed to be used with the older 8xx series boards; they're intended for use only in the newer, 9xx series chipsets.

Ok thanks for your help guys

You can replace a 400MHz FSB Banias with a 400MHz FSB Dothan, but you can't upgrade either of the above two to a 533MHz FSB Dothan as that path needs a 915 chipset (Sonoma platform).
