    Hi Guys,

I'm looking for portable notebook for me...I need it for lite office work (which is mainly word/excel and internet) and also little gaming and video playback (not HD though but it wud be nice if it could handle that) within $700..

Now after some research here and there...i've narrowed down to deciding between HP Pavilion dv2 w/ Athlon Neo and acer timeline w/ SU3500...
I guess su3500 would be better performing b/w the two but I want to know how much better...Is the overall hardware package of dv2 of Athlon Neo with Radeon 3410 better than timeline's su3500+GMA4500..

I know about the other advantages of timeline like bigger screen and better battery life but to me these things are not that important..

    Regards,

Get the HP if you're planning on doing any gaming like you say.

I would get the HP, for what the system lacks in its processor performance (it wont be that noticeable in daily tasks), the HD 3410 on the dv2 will more than make up in with the difference in graphics performance over the GMA 4500.

The AMD system gives a better overall performance and the Intel has superior power efficiency.

The wPrime processor benchmark results (measured in seconds, so the lower the number the better) taken from the HP dv2 (Athlon Neo MV-40) and MSI X340 (Core 2 Solo SU3500) reviews on NBR place the Neo at 103.521 seconds and the Core 2 Solo at 108.530 seconds. Really, the difference is small, but present.

Is that bench mark for the single core neo or the slightly faster dual core Neo that is now out?

Most likely singel core, dual core would be much faster. BTW, how does the dual core Turion Neo X2 @ 1.6GHz compare to a SU9400 @ 1.4GHz in performance?

CPU-wise the Core 2 Solo SU3500 is like 10% faster than the 1.6GHz Neo. WPrime stresses the memory portion a lot and AMD has an advantage there so they'll be ahead. WPrime=AMD to a lesser degree as SuperPI=Intel

Of course the 3410 is a lot faster than the 4500.

For gaming the HP will be much better. For normal use there won't be much difference.

Neither of them can play Youtube HD. You'll need the dual core versions for that.

Batterylife, fan noise and heat of the Acer is way better.

ok thanks for the no guys...but I thought the neo was dual core  ...coz i remember reading it in one of the reviews...maybe reviewer was mistaken..so i guess i'll go with dv2 unless some new notebook is comin with dual core neo soon? any news about that?

EDIT: Apparently there's a HP dv2z with Turion Neo X2...gotta find more about it...

DV2 is also available with Neo X2. Dual Core, which performs close to Intel SU9400.

From what I remember playing in the store my TT with the SU9300 1.2ghz cpu felt a bit faster than the Dual Core Neo in a dv2. But that was testing start up and shut down times.

Start up and shut down are more influenced by hard drive performance and number of running processes than CPU performance.

In Passmark CPU Mark Neo X2 scores 819 (one sample). SU9400 scores 923 (thirty samples).

Yes, gettin from here soon :)...Just had few queries regarding warranty policy of HP so emailed their support. Actually it would be better if I also share it here also..

I'm getting the laptop in US, but I would be moving back to my home country India in 3months. In India, at present HP is only selling dv2, no dv2Z...so I want to know if warranty (and extended warranty) is applicable there ?

usually HP provides a worldwide warranty. We recently had to sent my friend's lappy(bought in Estonia) for repair here, in UK. Even though it was out of warranty, they fixed it for free due to the faulty GF8400

Actually i went to Hp's site they say they only provide warranty if that particular model is sold in the country where u'r claiming warranty...so wanted to confirm that...lets see what they answer..coz india don't have dv2z yet..
BTW i had found a $250 off coupon for this laptop from logicbuy which just expired yesterday :(
