I've had one of these for four or five years. I used it on my desktop, currently it's on my office computer. (It takes a little bit of CPU overhead, more than PCI soundcards do) I don't think it's still made or supported, but it's been great, very versatile and trouble-free. It's got a nice feature that it detects headphones, mikes, etc, so all I need to do is plug the headphone into the unit, which is right next to the monitor, and the speakers switch off.

For my notebook, however, I use the tiny Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Amigo, also a USB device. It's cheap, seems as good as the old Aurilium, and is the size of a car key. And it doesn't seem to take any CPU overhead.
