Im planning to buy this laptop:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/product.php?sku=804558&camp_id=ppc_Froogle_search
It says it has a pci-express slot, so can i upgrade the GPU on it to a DX10 GPU?
If i can upgrade the GPU then what type of MXM is it? Also where do i buy the GPU from?
Cheers,

PCI-EXPRESS SLOT refers to the express card slot(google/search it). It does not mean your upgrade your video card.
Uses for the expres card slot are:
-
so does anybody know if i can upgrade the gpu on this laptop?
the laptop has a dvi output port. -
I believe the answer is no.
-
how do i found out for definite that i can upgrade the gpu of this laptop?
is there software that tells you every detail of your laptop? -
Not that kind of detail.
Only way of knowing for sure: take a Philips (oh, the irony) and open her up. -
Since this is a thread about the x57, i wonder how much ram can this laptop hold, i currently have 1.5gb of ram on vista ultimate 32-bit.
Any replies would be grateful. -

Use CPU-Z's mainboard details to check the chipset. If it is the Intel 945 chipset then it will support 2GB RAM modules and, if you have 2 RAM slots then that is a maximum of 4GB. However, 32-bit Vista doesn't actually address more than about 3GB.

Thank you for the reply John.
The chipset is i945pm, so that means my laptop is able to use 4gb altogether? But vista would only address 3gb. -

Your choice is whether to replace your 512MB module with 1GB or 2GB (200 pin DDR2 SODIMM). Vista likes lots of RAM so I would look at the 2GB modules. ebuyer seems to have the best retailer prices I can find at the moment. ebay can be a little cheaper.

Thanks for the recommendations John, they are very helpful, i will see what i will upgrade to in the near future, but at the moment, my 1.5gb is running just fine, i bought the 1gb stick to replace the 512mb beforehand.

Hello
Do this notebook Philips X57 can run dual channel with? Default settings are OK for dual channel? If yes change 2x512 to 2x1024 RAM would improve it? Is it easy to change on this notebook?
Thanks for your answers!!
Jeff -
I thought 945pm couldnt run 4GB ram (2x2gb). Someone debated me about this because I thought that it could but the other person said he tested it and it wouldnt run.

Hi, I am posting a reply with my psp so please mind the grammar, i have ordered a 2gb module couple days ago, I will have 3gb ram total, would my x57 address it or i have to buy another 1gb stick.
Quick question, the manual doesnt say anything about the fan button but which mode is silence and fast, the display shows 3 large blades and 5 medium blades, i am just confused.. hope that 2gb stick works.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
*edit 2* i have now added a 2gb pc2-5300 ddr2 ram stick and it works perfectly. Now have a 3gb powered laptop, no need for pagefiling now. Thanks again to John Ratsey.

I have tried searching philips x57 for MXM but i come to no results..is this laptops gpu upgradable to a 7600? sorry if this is an old question.
-edit- nevermind i did a search on the forums.
Damn this laptop for not having MXM! -
I had the same question. So you are saying the 4GB DDR ram will work with Philips X57?
Do you know what MHz you need for the Ram (excuse my ignorance) as I was told this piece on info was important B4 buying Ram. Any thing else I sould know before buying. -

If, as tofuboi01 has reported, one 2GB module works, then 2 x 2GB will also work. However, 32-bit Windows can only use about 3GB.

hello all,
i have the philips x57 with 1gb ram only
can i upgrade to 4gb ram and work it with vista 64 ?
does it support 4 gb ram this notebook?
in the description of sale I had seen only 2gb ram support
thanks for help -

As tofuboi01 reported further up this thread, 3GB works. Therefore I would expect the chipset to handle 4GB. Vista 64 should be able to address all 4GB, but I have never tried.
If you are in doubt, first buy 1 x 2GB so you have 2.5GB (assuming your 1GB is 2 x 512MB), get Vista 64 working (I don't know if there are possible driver issues with this model) and then invest in the other 2GB.

if 3gb ram works with xp and vista on the philips x57 it's so good !!
i dont want 4gb because we are must to use 64 bits system, and they have many probleme with program and driver ...
So now my question is to ..
is this a good idea to run with 3gb ram, it dont use the dual channel ..
its most performing 3gb ram or 2gb ram in this condition with the notebook ???
they have a big difference ?
thanks for help
