Hi, i bought a photofast expresscard USB 3.0 GM3000EX this week. I bought it as it was discreet looking and not like those big bulky ones you can buy now.
It comes with a USB Y splitter cable.

I also bought a USB 3.0 enclosure for my 2.5 SATA HD.
I am having some problems with it. I have installed the drivers and the expresscard is backwards compliant. It works with my USB 2.0 devices.
However, as i soon as i plug in a USB 3.0 cable the usb icon disappears. I tried it using the cable alone/plugged into my HD and the same thing happens. I cannot use my external HD. I would be very surprised if my external HD was too powerful to use with a USB cable.
When i plug my HD using the usb 3.0 cable into a usb 2.0 port directly it works so my HD is ok.
I bought an icybox usb 3.0 enclosure and that only comes with a usb connector so it is not even like i can plug in a 5V adapter anywhere. I believe you can get one for this model.
Y type USB 5V DC power supply Cable
What good is that going to do me though when my HD enclosure cannot even make use of it.
Do you think it is a driver problem happening?
Or may be it is the specs of my laptop?
The laptops i own are below in my sig. I use the integrated graphics mode
x3100 for my SZ and my Sony TT has got a GS45 chipset.
Any ideas?

It sounds like either the driver is malfunctioning or, mroe likely, your drive isn't being supplied with enough power.
Expresscard was made with full USB 2.0 support + a PCIe 1x bus, and since you're using USB 3.0, it's likely working off of the 3.3v PCIe power, which I don't think supplies many amps (definitely less than the 500mA @ 5V USB 2.0 supplies). So I think what's happening is your drive is being underpowered. If you plug in a flash drive/perhaps a low power ssd, it might work.
Unfortunately this means you'll need to find a USB 3.0 data + power Y cable instead of the USB 3.0 to 2.0 cable that came with your card. Expresscard was never made to power/recharge devices, it's more of a simple data expansion port. -

Thanks for your help.
I have got it to work now. I reinstalled the drivers again and tried again with the cables and it is working and i now have usb 3.0 and my laptop does support it and power my 2.5 HD.
You need to plug one of the cables that came with the expresscard into the 2.5 usb port and plug one into the usb 3.0 port.
It is working now. -
Well then it seems I was wrong!
Glad to hear it's working, enjoy the superawesome xfer speeds! -

Hi Rachel -
I too purchased the GM3000EX, however I did not receive any device drivers. Unfortunately, their website does not seem to offer them for download.
Might it be possible for you to send me the driver you have?
Otherwise I should be able to get this worked out through the support channel sometime during the next work week.
