I have really bad vision without my glasses. My vision is 20/400, and legally blind is 20/200. This means I can see about 3 inches away from my face and then after that it's all blur.
For this reason, I am browsing around for a portable computer where the pixel density is so high that I can no longer see the pixels, even if I put it right next to my eyes.
My laptop has a ppi of 133, which I think is the highest so I'm looking for something smaller. My phone has a ppi of 200, and it isn't enough. I am looking at the Iphone 4, which is supposed to have a ppi of 326. I wondering if somebody has a device wtih that ppi, and if you can still see the pixels.

If you want a large a screen as possible with an ultra high PPI, then the galaxy note 5.3" has a res of 1280x800 (beyond standard HD), this puts its PPI to 284.8.
Why this obsession with pixel density however? How often do you use your device 3 inches from your face? -
Is 284 ppi enough to not see the pixels at a very close distance?
I want high pixel density becuase I don't like wearing my glasses all the time and when I take them off and need to search up something I'd prefer not to see pixels. This isn't something I do in public but maybe when laying on my bed. It's not that big of a deal but I figure with ppi's of 326 that should be getting to the point where pixels are too small to see. -
I'm legally blind without my glasses or contacts and I have no problems using my iPhone 4S w/out either. retina display still looks pretty nice up close

Could you not put a fresnel lens over the top of the screen?

A fresnel lens is basically a flat lens. It might mean that you could focus on a laptop at a more usual distance and not be constrained to phones. Just an idea.

A more usual distance as in super close to the face? If that was the case it sounds like a good idea for my laptop.

Ok, I should ask. Are you just extremely long/short sighted, or some other problem. I'm not an eye expert so I don't know about other conditions which could cause what you're describing.
By "usual distance", I mean that you should be able to focus on the screen at 2-3 feet with a lens over the top. I just can't imagine holding a phone 3 inches away from your face being that practical in the long run. Chances are that I've made some huge oversight here so please correct me if I'm wrong. -
the OP (and me) only have to hold the phone that close if we're not wearing some kind of corrective lenses. So if it's 4am and I want to make sure I set the alarm on my phone, I have to bring it fairly close (probably closer to 5 or 6 inches if I focus lol) to look at it. I'm very nearsighted.

. Jokes aside, i understand where you come from, i don't have a sight that bad, but it is still bad. I can see why you'd high ppi want for the phone, but for a laptop, why wouldn't you be using it without your correcting lenses in the first place. Anyways, didn't sony have a 13" with a 1080p lcd, that would make for a high pixel density.
EDIT: After doing a few calculations, i don't think the 13" 1080p lcd would cut it for you. It is still below 200ppi (~170), you may not be able to get better on a laptop though. -
7 years ago my 20/200 and 20/360 eyes were corrected to 20/15 each side with Lasik. My eyes/prescriptions have been 100% stable since then. The correction included taking care of some annoying astigmatism as well. Passed the last DMV vision check in about 15 seconds including the new test with the annoying blinking white lights in your peripheral vision intended to mess with your depth perception.
I 'recouped' the cost of the Lasik (about $2500 from a quality clinic/doctor, the discount clinics can go to hell) in three years by not having to spend approx $750 a year on prescription glasses, sunglasses, and sports goggles (skiing & diving).
Of course I need to use the occasional reading glasses, but only in low-light situations. Those currently cost me approx $50- a year for multiple pairs bought at any corner drug store. I do NOT need to use reading glasses for computer work or reading paper or ebooks as long as the lighting is reasonable. My desktop monitor is a pair of 24" screens, my laptop is a 17" HP, my ebook reader/tablet is an el-cheapo 7" Coby 7022, and my cell phone is a tiny/ancient Nokia with what has to be a 1.5" screen. Customers often loan me laptops from 13" to 15" and I have no problems with those. -

to get back to the OP.. the 13" Sony we're talking about is the Vaio Z. They are seriously some sweet laptops. expensive though (we're talkin $2k base price). -
Ppi just makes text and other objects a bit sharper. They won't make them bigger for you to see.
What you need is a phone with a bigger screen and hence bigger text like the galaxy note mentioned above. I've always found ppi and resolution in such small screens pointless.
For laptops, you can increase windows font size across the board. Although screen resolution in a laptop has a more drastic effect on font size, it is much easier to enlarge or change than text in a smartphone
