Was looking to replace my trusty 720Qm to a 920XM, looking at nov-dec period the 920XM ES is around 380-420. Right now is going at least 500 and above! Thus not sure is is worth to upgrade now, Are they trying to milk as much $$$ from the remaining XM processors before Sandy Bridge platform is due in the coming months?
Can i have some suggest should i pay $500 for the 920XM ES now? or just wait till SB is fully launch?
Dont mind paying $500 for a 920XM if its OEM...but its hard to get by..![]()

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Yeah, milking it for all they can before SB which is due in the coming weeks.
Nice processor, but in three weeks or so we'll know how outdated it will be (and the prices will go lower, I'd guess).
Good luck. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
lol yeah wait couple more weeks, 940XM will drop like a ton of bricks.
-
for 500 bucks i would wait and just buy a SB laptop and sell ur's...you'll be better off that way. Sell ur's for like 800 and than you'll have 1300 for a new laptop
and you'll get a way better one
-
haha,is having $1300 able to buy a decent SB refresh specs better then my 5870m and the 920xm(future) combination beast?
lolx, if so i should not spending moola on the M15X.
Anyway, managed to shack a 920XM OEM at ebay(Pending), but Seller didnt responds to any email nor send out the item (paid on 9 dec). Should i just wait for a few more days (hoping seller will respond to me) before opening a dispute?
*Trying to convince myself that seller is away on a trip, hopefully back by this week....* -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
lol sucks, I hoped that explained the absence when I bought a phone on Ebay...seller made some bs excuse and started scamming other people.
1300 will maybe buy you a stripped down SB laptop vs a full loaded last generation, but as a wise man once told us last generation technology devalues faster than falling elephants.. -
all i remember is jayness or whatever his name is saying that the basic quad core will be faster than the 940XM
-
That is probably true. The cheapest and most common Sandy Bridge quad-core appears to be the i7-2630QM. It runs at 2.0GHz and can Turbo up to 2.9GHz. The clock speeds are thus slightly less than the 940XM, but the architecture is superior so the performance should be similar or maybe even better. Lenovo is selling a laptop in which it is paired with an HD 6570 GPU for $850-900 so there is a reasonable chance you can get something with a high-end GPU for $1300.
-
850-900 with they new SB? where is that link. They started releasing prices? If that's true thats super cheap.
EDIT:I barely got my g51j for 1400 it had 720QM and 260M and that was cheap -
If the i7-2630QM Rivals the 920/940XM clock for clock....i will be amazed and cant imagine what will happen to old i7 artitechture.... we will be dumping our i3/5/7 for SB....
-
that's why i have been telling everyone for the last 3 months to just wait unless they has to get one this second.
-
Most people won't notice any difference in performance, so no it's not true that people will go running off to buy SB and dumping their current systems. Even the "older" C2D systems are more than enough for over 90% of the population.

Read the press release at the bottom of this article. Also, this post claims to have rather detailed knowledge, but I'm not sure where it's from.
Sandy Bridge is superior to Nehalem and Westmere clock-for-clock -- the only question is by how much (some sites say only about 10%, others closer to 20%). And yes, for laptops, Sandy Bridge is going to be a lot better than the Nehalem derivatives (not just because of the performance, but because it was designed for lower power consumption from the ground up rather than being a server architecture cut down to fit in a much smaller form factor).
Of course, if you already have an Arrandale laptop, it doesn't make much sense to go for Sandy Bridge unless you've got a lot of money on your hands (or your workplace is paying for it...). It's more for people like me who are still using the Santa Rosa platform from 3 years ago. -
I agree, for most people and what they do with their laptops, they won't notice a slight difference if you secretly swapped their i core CPUs to C2Ds. Unless you use programs excessively that depend heavily on CPU processing power, there won't be much of a point to go with the newest processors.

Personally I went ahead and got my 8740w (which just arrived this morning!) because business machines typically refresh later than consumer machines, and I was worried that I might lose the 16:10 screen. And given the rumblings I'm hearing about the new M6600 Dell Precision and how it's going to 16:9... I think I might have made the right choice.

Except maybe their laptops won't POST.

Yup, from what i have seeing, i expect the X9*00 series,QX9300 (Intel Extreme series) OEMS to drop even further to the $200~ range after SB launch. I wonder will there still be demand for the Core2 processor upgrades..
Planning to upgrade to 920,940XM, but whoa Sharp Price increase!
