Hi, i was just thinking about this the other day and didnt come to a conclusion:
Is there any difference between plastic and aluminium etc when it comes to getting permanent marks on the computer? I have a laptop that is completely plastic. It is the colour silver, but where you rest your hand on it, the right side, it have a permanent mark of my palm. Black mark on my silver lappy. Not good.
But my computer was bought years and years ago, and i cant remember WHEN i got this, and i dont have a laptop that is made of some sort of metal to compare with.

    Anyone with some ideas/answer?

Most paint discolours with time. I think sweaty palms accelerate the process.

Painted metal won't be any different so you would need to look for a brushed aluminium palmrest, in which case watch out for floating voltages if the computer isn't earthed. It's not dangerous but can cause a tingling in the fingertips.

Otherwise black paint is probably the best choice - it tends to stay black.

not always (i.e. packardbell). I think it all depen on the quality of the paint and quality of the plastic.

The paint in business laptops has tendency to be more durable.

I think i have never seen painted metal before, hmmmmmm

You know, all the laptops that have a metal chassis with the silver colour. Isnt silver the native colour of the aluminium? It isnt painted.
And what about the lifetime of the paint. How long will a laptop be ok with normal use before having discolour of some sort?

Not that it has any thing to do with markings, but plastic blocks less wifi than does metal.

My first notebook DeLL black plastic. Not painted no issues 8 years old. Gateway painted 6 months wear. Yes I use a lot but I would like black plastic no paint or aluminum. I don't trust paint. Yea mostly on high traffic area but really anywhere.

it really depends, I have a painted laptop, but it was done professionally, and I am told that the paint will not discolor unless I leave it in direct sunlight for years. I have high grade oil paint used for painting trucks, and the finish is protected by 7-10 coats of clear.
The clear coat is what is important. on a factory painted system, they will use a clear epoxy coating, to keep the system looking sharp, but it attracts fingerprints like crazy. If your laptop has lots of clear, put on properly, you will only get hazing if you spill chemicals on it, or if you somehow wear through all of the clear, down to the paint.

Overall, plastic laptops seem to be pretty good, but the way in which the paint is applied makes all of the difference.

My laptop which I am going to build this summer is going to have a stainless stell diamondplate chassis, and it will be very interesting to see how it stands up ;)
