I've spent A LOT of time reading these forums in the hopes of making this decision myself, but it seems like the more I read, the more confused I get, so I decided to just post my specific situation and ask for help. I'm not sure if this goes here or in the "Which Notebook?" forums, so I apologize and please move it if I made a mistake. Please keep in mind that I know very little about computers, but I want to make a good decision/investment. Anyway, I'll just get to the point:
I'll be entering college this fall and after much deliberation I've decided to get a Dell Latitude d630 as my back to school laptop. Now, my problem is, how should I configure it?

Here are the specs I'm looking at, with my indecisions highlighted:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7100 (1.80GHz) 2M L2 Cache, 800MHz Dual Core
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.00GHz) 4M L2 Cache, 800MHz Dual Core *+$50

Genuine Windows Vista™ Ultimate, with media (because I want the media center, which isn't available with business)
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ LCD Panel
    2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS *this added $135 to pricetag :(
    80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 5400RPM
    80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM *+$40

    24X CD-RW/DVD
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    6 cell primary battery

So, as you can see, I don't know which processor and which HD I should get. I'm going from a desktop to a laptop so if there's a significant decrease in speed I might find it annoying. I will be using this laptop for school-related purposes so that's pretty much MS Office applications, internet, music, watching video files. I do some audio ripping/burning/recording. I don't do any gaming at all. I'm not computer savvy so I don't plan on doing any DIY hardware upgrades. I want this laptop to last me 4~5 years. Since the RAM upgrade is going to cost me $135, it would be nice to shave a little off the pricetag, but if the processor and/or HD upgrades are worth it for me, I'm willing to pay for them.

I need to make my final decision by July 19th. If I left anything out please tell me. Thanks very much in advance for any help offered!

P.S. Please don't direct me to any of the 5400 vs. 7200 threads because I think I've read almost all of them.

Well for you task, the T7100 should be perfect but in 4-5 years you might be using something that requires more processing power.

A 7200rpm drive will help programs load faster and you will have a lower boot time but for 40 dollars i dont think its worth it and you can always upgrade it later.
    .
Also ram is easy to upgrade. I recommend getting the lowest amount of ram you can get and upgrade it yourself. You can get 2 gb(2x1gb) for 100 dollars or less(you can get 1gb for less then 40). Deals located in the Hot Ram Deals thread.

I would get the 2.0 GHz. Processor and the 7200rpm Harddrive, With those settings you will get a good computer for your money

Go with 7200rpm hard disk, and T7300 because of the double cache.
