I've been getting a message when i start my notebook for the past few days about a smart event that has occured. It tells me that the hard drive may fail in the near future. I have been on the phone with HP, have tried resetting it to factory settings, putting in a new hard drive, and using their recovery disks. Nothing works, i still get the message as soon as I turn on my computer. If you need any more information ask me.
The computer is under warranty, but hp doesnt seem like they want me to send it in to them. Today i got their recovery disks, which didnt work, and now they are sending me more recovery disks.

Okay, can you get into the operating system.
If so, download and install HDTUNE.
It has a S.M.A.R.T. monitor built into the program.
This is what you do:
Launch the program, then click on the health tab.
You will see a big chart. Now look at the hdtune window, and you will see a small blue floppy looking icon. This is the "save screenshot" button.
Take a screenshot of this tab, as the other tabs.
I recommend running a benchmark.
If the drive passes the benchmark, than the drive is still somewhat good.
If the health tab says that the harddrive failed the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, than I suggest that you bac up your data and get a new harddrive.
This program also has an error scan, I recommend running the full scan.
Save a screenshot of each tab, and upload the pictures into "photobucket", or another image host.
Then post up the images here in this thread.
Once we can see the smart settings, we can tell you if your drive is good or bad.

Hmmm... i've gotten on before, just by messing with it enough, but it hasnt let me yesterday or today... it will only take me to the recovery screen... do you know a way to get in from there?

i've been trying for an hour or so to get it on with no luck. if it helps you help me, both hard drives passed the phoenixbios test that you get to by pressing f10

Okay, can you get a run command?
You can usually get this option, when the ntldr error appears.
If you type in chkdsk
This will allow you to run an indepth harddrive scan from dos.
I hope you can do this.
If you cannot get the harddrive to boot, I suggest formatting and reinstalling the operating system.
If you have data on the harddrive, you want to get off, I recommend buying a notebook to USB adaptor from Newegg, for like $15.
You can simply plug the drive in, connect the USB, and transfer your files to your desktop.
You have to physically remove the harddrive to do this.
