Hi. So one of my friends is buying a Dell 1520 laptop and is trying to tell me that it's Nvidia 8600 GPU is a better graphics card than my 7950 GTX. I disagree with them completely and say that the only thing the 8600 has going for it over my 7950 is that it is DX10 compatible. They say that my 512MB of memory over their 256 MB isn't everything in a GPU, and that the 8600 is clocked faster and thus a better card. Would someone please help me settle this?! Thanks for the help in advance. :)

Oh, and actually it is a 8600 GT card...and is there any difference between the regular 8600 GT and the ones that Dell puts in their laptops? I heard some discussion about this but was unclear with it all...thanks again.

The 8600GT is at best equal to the 7900GS. No more. And that is the 8600GT in the G1S, with DDR3 memory. The Dell 8600 GT is crippled with DDR2 memory, and scores around two thirds of the 8600GT(G1S), and almost equal to the 8600GS, in 3DMark06. For performance comparison b/w the 7950 and 8600, check out 3D Mark scores and game performance.

It's easy to settle this. Both of you should run some benchmarks: 3D Mark 06, Aquamark 3, and in game benchmarks if you both play games. Done

um a 7950GTX is a top of the line card. the 8600GT is a mid range card at best. the 8600GT might go head to head with the 7900GS in some games but in most times it will be behind. go back to ur mate and laugh at his pitiful attempt to try and beat your card with baseless arguments. oh and when he gets his card, be ready with your benchmarks so when he runs his, he will be crying back to his mommy LOL

the only thing that can compare to the 7950 gtx is the 8800 gt, but the 8600 gt is the best there is in the 15" notebook.

use that to own your stupid friend

    even comparing a 8600gts to a 7950gt, the 8600gts dies

and your 7950gtx is better than the gt

tell him you can't compare clock speeds across different platform

tell him the 8600gt has a dismal 128 bit pipeline

tell him he got ddr 2 ram on his gpu while you've got ddr3

oh also, tell him he's just another DX10 over hyped idiot
