Buy a new laptop, that will have new speakers.

    Annoyed mode off.

Sean, post some details - what soundcard o you have, internal speakers, external speakers?

If you use any of the Creative Soundblasters - opening folders with the "3D" thing active sounds odd.
You could try updating your driver - I had an issue with an X-Fi go where it was a bad driver - updating wasn't enough - so you could try removing the driver and installing a new one.
