If you drop the Hard Drive, its unlikely the protective casing would have a significant impact. You may also want to check out the Western Digital Passport Drive. It looks very cool as well.

If you want a great portable HD, then I'd say go with the WD Passports as well.

I recently got a WD MyBook Essential Edition which I'd say is pretty portable...but it has a power adapter. It is 500GB..I got it for $120, which is a better deal than the Lacie even.

    Western Digital Passport
Macsales OWC Mercury on the Go
    Lacie Mobile Hard Drive

I have and still use all three. They are great. Everytime I upgrade my laptop hard drive I throw it in the OWC Mercury on the Go enclosure.

Here is a link as I prefer the OWC solution. The quality is awesome too.

formac are great drives also powered by usb but have more favourable reviews than western dig. externals and also formac are voted by several pc magazines as being better for speed throughput.

oh and they make different models to accomadate different connections FW400/800 USB 2.0

I was about to order one, but i found a local person selling an unopened one on craigslist for 90 bucks. I get charged tax by dell, so its a better deal for me =). Dont have to wait for it to ship either.
