Hi all,
I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on my situation which I've detailed below:
I own a Toshiba portege R30-A-1CQ ( http://www.toshiba.co.uk/laptops/portege/r30/portege-r30-a-1cq/) which comes with a 4100M. I purchased a used 4210M and installed it but the computer doesn't power on - absolutely nothing happens.
On paper it looks like the two parts are compatible with each other, but now I'm unsure if I've missed something, if the CPU's faulty or if it's just the Toshiba being fussy. NB: the R30-A-1CM comes with the 4210M ( http://www.toshiba.co.uk/laptops/portege/r30/portege-r30-a-1cn/) and my research suggested that the CPU was the only difference between the M and Q versions.
Can anyone think of anything that I've missed? The seller says that the CPU works but I can't confirm this myself. I've reinstalled the 4100M for now & everything's working.
Cheers,
Andy.

Hi Andy - welcome to the forums. Thanks for registering, too.
The first thing I would do is check to see if a BIOS update is available for your notebook. Usually that can be found on Toshiba's Support site. If the 4210M CPU came out after the 4100M, it's possible Toshiba had to add support for it via BIOS update. To take this a step further, you can ask or search in our Toshiba forum to see if anyone has the Portege R30 w/ the 4210M, and have them check their BIOS to see which version they're running. That would eliminate the BIOS variable in this entirely.
Beyond that you would unfortunately have to find another notebook that has an Intel "Haswell" series processor and try the 4210M you bought in it. See if it boots. That's the only true way to eliminate the CPU as being an issue. From my experience, it's very, very rare a CPU is bad. In all my years here I can't remember a single instance where someone had a bad CPU. Check the 4210M for signs of physical damage. If there's none, I'd say it's very unlikely it's bad ...TomJGX likes this. -
As Charles has said, these are your options.. I find it strange that the 4210M doesn't work off the bat since it's not a quad core and just a slightly better dual.. try upgrading your BIOS and testing your 4210M in another laptop if possible.. Otherwise, you might be stuck witb the 4110M..

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
Andy1989, follow these steps:
0. Maker sure that you have latest BIOS version, update if necessary.
1. Put original CPU back.
2. Format a USB flash card as DOS bootable
3. Download and copy to flash cmospwd.exe
4. Boot and run cmospwd /k
5. Turn off, switch CPU
6. ?Success?
cmospwd may require cwsdpmi.exe to run, I got it from Nvidia flashing package for DOS. It resolved the problem in similar situation - when 100% compatible working CPU refused to boot in my notebook. -
Hi all,
Only just had a chance to play with this again as I've needed the computer for a few fairly important work things for the past couple of weeks.
I've tried upgrading the BIOS (it's actually UEFI but Toshiba call it BIOS) from 4.40 to 4.50 (the latest version available) but this hasn't made a difference. I'll post in the Toshiba forum as Charles suggested.
Many thanks to everyone for replying.TomJGX likes this.
