Alright so my gf's HDD decided to crash. At first its bootable and freezes at the windows booting logo. Going into safe mode still freezes, trying to use a recovery disk freezes and hangs. I tried taking it out and putting it into my desktop and the HDD is not recognizable in windows (neither in my computer or disk management). I went into linux and the HDD is recognizable in which I was able to retrieve some of the files however it wouldn't allow me to reformat the drive through gpart. I tried using Parition Magic to delete and reformat the drive which I think worked. But now the HDD rarely shows up on windows at all and sometimes shows up in linux. Also when I was able to see the drive into windows for a short brief of time I was able to do a SURFACE Test through partition magic and its telling me there are 240+ bad sectors. This drive was just bought last Nov though.

Is this a hardware failure? Should I RMA it?

RMA it after you get the data out. I assume it has no sign of drop/water/tasty stuff.

nope none at all. Also I already got the crucial data out. And considering I can't access the HDD at all anymore that is no longer possible.

Usually, when a drive start reporting (more than a few) bad sectors it means it is about to fail. You should RMA it.
