My problem is that I want a laptop that doesn't exist.
I want:
1) A dell latitude, or other compatible dell that supports the d-port and d-dock docking stations because I love their functionality, and already have a couple of the docks lying around.
2) a 15.4" WUXGA (1920x1200) screen. Yes, I'm completely insane, I know it, but I absolutely love the high resolution even at the small size.
3) A solid business class machine (core 2 duo, 2-4GB ram, etc) that the latitude can provide.
4) A decent but not necessarily outstanding mobile graphics card for the casual FPS gamer.
The problem:
* Dell latitude D830 has all the specs I want, but tops out at the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M which supports DX10, and isn't horrible, but certainly isn't a decent gaming card by modern standards.
* The Dell Precision M4300 includes almost all the same hardware and includes a Quadro FX 360M, which might be a small step up and is designed for 3D workstation stuff, but as far as I tell, still doesn't really cut it for even the casual FPS usage.
* The two Dell 15.4" laptops that support a somewhat better GPU (GeForce 8600M GT) are the XPS 1530 and Vostro 1500, but neither of them support the d-port/d-dock nor come with WUXGA.
So, to bring a long story to its concluding question, does anybody know whether a latitude D830 or precision M4300 with a Quadro NVS 140M or FX 360M respectively, could have its graphics card replaced by an 8600M GT (or preferably better) card? I know these cards aRE user-serviceable, to the extent that I have opened up previous latitudes and replaced faulty video cards with replacements, but I have no idea about the electrical, thermal, physical compatibility.
Thoughts?

What's wrong with playing games on the 360M? Just install gaming drivers on it from laptopvideo2go and you're good to go. Its ok for casual gaming...but forget about gaming on 140M.
I'm sure there's a Latitude or Precision that has NVS320m or FX1600M. Those will be alot better -better than the 8600M Gt. -
Well the 360M is still a 8400GS...so, won't much difference in terms of gaming compared to the 140m. For 15.4'' you are out of luck sorry.
The 17'' M6300 has the FX1600M which is based on the 8700GT.

Bottom line: for ANY Dell notebook, for an upgrade to be possible they have to have sold the notebook with that card at some point in time. Dell uses a proprietary design for them by them, so another source is out of the question.

Thanks for your feedback, everybody. Been quite helpful and informative. Looks like one or more interesting options will be coming out in a couple of months, and if I'm willing to sacrifice the Latitude compatibility requirement (which I might well do), this looks like a superb option:

Anybody know of any other upcoming laptops with similar specs?
