Hi, I currently have an HP 8710w with a quadro fx 1600m graphics card. Is it possible to upgrade to a quadro fx 3600m? and if it is, roughly how much will it cost and can i do it through HP or must i do it myself?

    thanks!

It is possible, but sourcing the graphics chip is an issue. You will need to get one from HP as I believe the BIOS locks out non-HP ones.

thomask, do you remember how much the price difference was between the 1600m and the 3600m?
The card is probably going to run you over $800.
I know my quadro fx2500m, died after the first month of owning my Voodoo. The card was faulty and a surface mount transistor blew.
Anyways, when I was having another card overnighted to me, I asked hom much the graphics card cost. Well Voodoo told me that Eurocom charges $1360 for the fx2500m, which is where Voodoo gets their clevo parts from.
Well luckily I had the three year warranty, so I only paid shipping.
Point of teh matter is, quadro's are damn expensive.
It will be cheaper cause yours is an HP, but I would assume $600-1000 for the card.

Compatibility, I am not sure, I dont think it will cause the fx3600m has larger power usage and a higher tdp, so it will need a bigger heatsink.

    Thanks for the replies.

Bought my 8710w before the 3600m was available, didn't know its that expensive. Would you say it's worth it to upgrade to the 3600m or will the performance only be marginal?

    Thanks again for the help

Well, the FX 1600M is something like 8600M GTS and the FX 3600M is like 8800GTS so I'd say it's worth the upgrade (if it is indeed possible, that is). Check the reviews of the desktop variants to see the performance difference.

The FX1600M is actually the 8700M GT.
