Hey guys I haven't ordered my laptop yet however, because of pricing, I was wondering if (and how easy) it is possible to upgrade the GPU from a 7970m to a 680m and if you can change the wireless card in the Clevo p150em. Over in the UK there aren't many Clevo re sellers that stock the 680m so I was considering purchasing it at a later date if possible.

    Thanks for any help guys!

You can get lower prices and avoid the hassle of upgrading if you buy the 680M from the reseller directly, however if you really don't have the money. The main reason to buy clevo is it's upgreadability, it's fairly easy to open the machine and upgrade the GPU. However, I suggest contacting your reseller where you originally bought your P150EM to discuss the upgrade.

Cheers for the speedy reply + Rep

Yeah I hear allot about their upgrade-ability and customization which is why i decided to go with clevo/sager. I just wasn't sure if there was some restrictions based on motherboards. I built my own desktop and love how I can slip in a new card with no troubles however I always assumed laptops where abit more... "pre-built" leaving modification limited.

The mobo has no restrictions. The CPU, GPU, HDD, mSATA SSD, and 4x DIMM Slots are user-accessible if you have the components

You might want to ask your reseller how you upgrade it, but basically you just take out the heatsink and card, and replace it with a new card (heatsink may require a new specific model for the new card, but some card's layout is the same)

Although to be safe, ask for the precise direction to what you should do from your reseller

Hmz, not really an upgrade, more of an expensive side-grade.

Ha! After doing abit of research i'd have to agree, seems as though currently (without any firm drivers) both cards perform similarly despite the huge price gap.

Just out of interest I noticed that (in another post) you managed to get 6800ish in 3DMark 11, the laptop i'm looking at getting has similar specs to yours. Just wondering if you could lemme know the clocks to achieve such a score?

i have to agree..they really have the same performance after overclocks...not worth throwing away 100s of dollars. Only advantage is that nvidia has much better firmware. Though give amd time and they will catch up for the most part.

Yup. Remember that Optimus went through the same stuff as Enduro. There is really no reason to upgrade to the 680m if you have the 7970m. Wait for a couple of years and then (assuming the MXM revision is the same) upgrade.

I have not played BF3 but games like Crysis 2 give me about 50. Other games are within the ballpark and so are my 3DMark11 scores (stock and OC'ed). So I am willing to bet that BF3 would give me about 35-40 at least maxed out.

    Alienware M17x R4 Notebook Review - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

this shows what the m17x does in most games

Also this is stock clocks so ~5800 3dmark11 overclocked is ~6800 sometimes more if your lucky. People average 15-20% higher scores with overclocks so even metro 33 would be playable with max settings with overclocks. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the scores/game performance will go up with better drivers. The drivers are terrible right now so plenty of room for improvements

two percent in some games. some games and benchmark the 7970 is better. they really are hand in hand the same minus Nvidia has better drivers and better switchable graphics
