Is it possible to upgrade my proc in my Area-51 m5500? I understand that there would/will be all kinds of fun temperature related things to take care of, but would it be possible? I would basically be using my notebook as a shell to put stuff into.

    I currently have an Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 2.00GHz...

    Yes?
    No?
    Maybe?

And if so, what fun things would I in the end need to do to make it so that my notebook doesn't turn into a molten mound of plastic? External cooling system?

    Thats all.

    Nick

Yes, it should be possible. However, the economic feasibility of a processor upgrade is questionable to me. There are only two (three?) processors with a higher speed than yours, which I assume is a 760.

I would assume heat output to be roughly the same, given the closeness of the speed ratings and the similar voltage ratings for each.

Yeah while it's possible I don't think it's nearly worth it. I doubt the CPU is the bottleneck of your system anyways...

In a word, probably. I'm not intimate with your line of laptops, but I bet you can upgrade it. But why would you do that?? Might as well spring for a new lappy.

It's not worth upgrading. Pentium M is quite old processor and your processor is quite fast. The possibility is Pentium M 770 or Pentium M 780, but could you find it new in a box?

For a measily 260MHz I don't think it's worth it to spend a couple hundred bux.

And it's not like you got a slouch of a cpu holding you back right now.

Yeah, the Pentium M 780 2.26ghz is the fastest we can go. You can be lucky and get a used 780 on ebay for about 125-150 bucks. Buying new is probably out of the question because Intel phased out 780 when the Core Duo came out. I feel your pain though. The only bottleneck that our machines have is our single core processors. Maybe it is time to do an overall upgrade.

    Yep! I just upgraded from a pentium M 760 to a 780 (2.26 GHZ)!
While I was on the case, I als upgraded my hard drive to a samsung HJMI 250 and my systems rocks! (with xp that is :)
I bought the cpu on ebay from a nice chinese guy for 149 US.

    Cheers

Yes, you can upgrade it to higher Pentium-Ms but the performance increase you'll get for the amount spent is so incredibly not worth it IMO.
