Yes, I'm here again dreaming about upgrading my 1564 some more!![]()
Call me crazy but I like my 1564 a lot. I tried buying a fully loaded HP dv6 7000 but I just can't do it for some reason so..
If I can upgrade this one to a 1080p screen then I might just keep it until it falls apart. Just had her opened up and it seems there are 30 of the 40 pins connected on the LVDS cable.
This laptop only came with the 1366x768 screen.
It's been said on these forums before that a straight swap isn't possible and a dual channel LVDS cable is needed.
I've been Googling for LVDS specs but it all looked like chinese to me so I'm asking here.
So I went looking for a cable that could fit and it seems I've found one. How about the cable of the 1764, the 1564's bigger sibling? Those came with 1600x900 from the factory. Would this cable support a 1080p screen? I know the cable is just a scaled up version of the 1564 one so it should fit without too much problems. +I've heard that 900p needs dual channel LVDS.
Part number for the 1764 cables would be: F77MK and 0TMY1, 1564 cable is 61TN9.
If I can get a 1080p screen in there then I'm getting 16GB of RAM too. 8GB just doesn't cut it with >= 3VM's open.

*BUMP*
I'm still working on this (slowly) so I picked up the 1764's cable for 3 bucks, seems it has 38 of 40 pins connected. (+a blue wire splitting off which looks like ground to me) 4 are in use for the webcam (USB?) now that leads me to the question if there are enough pins left to hook up a 1080P screen? The 1764 supported up to 1600x900 which may or may not have been dual channel LVDS but Google is no help here, couldn't find a thing.
I've read dual channel LVDS is 18+18 pins so maybe if screen and webcam share power somehow it's still possible.
I checked out another model that has a 1080p screen from the same era, the 1558, but it has a seperate connector for the webcam so I'm not getting my hopes up. Couldn't really tell from interwebs pictures what the cable looked like.
Part number is:
UM5 LVDS cable
DD0UM5LC000 Rev:3B
Anyone with a bit of knowledge of how an LVDS cable should look like?i don't want to spend a ton of money on a screen just to find out it doesn't work.

You should contact dell support/technical and ask was there a upgrade option to a higher resolution lcd for that laptop. And get a model number and part number if they have that option and see if one exists on eBay or Amazon to get to upgrade. But from the looks of it most 15" don't offer 1080 that is reserved for 17" mostly but that doesn't mean it can be a 15" but I can see a 16". So you need to first contact Dell and see from your Service tag if there ever was a upgrade LCD available.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
1564 wasn't sold with more than a 1368x768 panel. You could try the E6510's 15.6" panel. Dunno if the same generation M4500 would work also.

Indeed, the 1564 was only sold with a 1366x768 screen but my 1564 isn't exactly a 1564 anymore.
The motherboard and now the LVDS cable came from a 1764 which came with a 1600x900 screen. I just swapped out the cable. The 1564's only seem to have 30 (vs 38 in the 1764 cable) connected pins and what I assume ground splitting off. The question is if the 1764 used single channel or dual channel 1600x900 LVDS panel. apparantly both types exists and then there's a special 30 pins equivalent too? I'm confused with all these different types..
I can't ask Dell. Dell Belgium doesn't even bother to reply when you don't have any warrantly left and Dell US will tell me I'll have to ask my local Dell.
EDIT: It *should* work, the 8 extra pins are apparantly the second (B) channel I need. I got someone with a notebook with 1080P willing to lend me the screen for a few minutes to give it a try so after that's done I'll post my findings here.

Hello Aeny,
your post is great help for me as I'm still having good time with Dell 1564, still a great and reliable laptop. except couple of small issues with fan, nothing been a problem so far, I typically use this laptop for more than 12 Hour avg / in a day. I need your advice.
Following the current spec, and i really need a better screen as current screen is just limited to 1366 * 768, and causing eye soar.
You seem to be an expert in Dells 1564 screen upgrade, any expert advice for upgrading my tough 1564 to FHD 1080P screen (hopefullY), will be greatly appreciated.
HW Info / Monitor Name (Manuf): 156GW01 [DELL P/N: 1G5D3]
My 2010 Dell Inspiron 1564
| Obsidian Black | 1366 * 768 screen |Video Chipset: ATI/AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4330 | Intel Core i5-430M | Intel Core i5-430M | 8 GB DDR3 | 840 EVO 500GB & 1TB HDD | Dells A13 bios | 6-cell battery | Windows 7 64Bit |
Current crop of laptops quality chassis strength etc is bit concern and dell 1564 is strong enough take many drops as such (at least 6 to 7 time it's been accidentally drooped in the past 6 years, from chair, bed and even over road), still nothing problem.
I'm very happy with it, better screen makes my eyes more happy, and less stressed.
So, your expert advice will be a super help.Last edited: Aug 7, 2015 -
SKVind,
Indeed the 1564 is a great laptop, mine has seen as much usage as yours and it's still going strong too. To upgrade the screen all you need is the LVDS cable of the 1764 model, the 17 inch variant of the 1564, and a 1080P screen which is compatible with the part number that's in my signature (B156HW01 v1). GPU has no matter in this since I've tried it successfully on all three possible combinations (4330, 5450, intel IGP). Also my above assumption that there were different screen models was incorrect, all should be 40 pins.
I hope that clears things up for you, have fun with your 1564 and if you have any more questions just ask them.

Aeny,
Amazing help, and thank you.
Some times some tips looks so simple yet they are powerful and extremely helpful. Your post over Dell 1564 FHD upgrade certainly helps many users.
I would have really looked into your post so much earlier to keep my eyes far from Spectacles.
Thanks again and I will go-ahead and order B156HW01 v1 Plus LVDS-DD0UM5LC000 Rev:3B from any reliable A+ grade supplier shortly.
May be another expert advice makes lot of impact from you is the LCD model number suggestion, here https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/B156HW01~V.1/ some models listed.
Here some more compatible list
http://www.panelook.com/B156HW01 V3_AUO_15.6_LCM_overview_685.html#compatible_model
By keeping LVDS-DD0UM5LC000 as critical ? Can I use most recent models such as B156HW01 V4 or some LG IPS compatible panel with 40 Pin FHD? or only TFT based screen works best with LVDS-DD0UM5LC000?
15.6 FHD IPS with higher nit (300) and higher contrast (700) would be ideal to upgrade, but not sure either works with LVDS M5L or not?
Please advice.
Thank you for your time. -
Thank you. BTW Which version of b156hw01, seems there are several versions in this model v1 to v7, any specific series/ model? you are referring to? -
i was talking about B156HW01 V4 - it is the best matte TN you can get onto 40pin standard lvds cable 2ch 6bit
you can also look at B156HW01 V7 it is the very same but glossy
as for me other versions has lower image quality
also please keep in mind that every screen needs to be calibrated or at least download an .icc profile for that model, that would be as close as you can get to the ideal without an expensive calibrator. please dont rely on that windows colour calibration, that is just a joke -
Thank you. For the last 2 days i had spent more time to scout eBay and other sites for sourcing B156HW01 V.x, but not successful so far. Only few stores in the UK seem to be having ready stock (no shipping to USA, only to UK and EU as per email from the seller)
Seems only Alibaba, Aliexpress and Homibaba (..) will be next?
Overall it's mere hard to get B156HW01 V 4 or 7, rest of the models V1, 2, 3 5 , 6 etc is very much available.
Any advices further?
Possible upgrade path to 1920x1080 screen?
