Now, I'm in no way intending on getting any upgrades anytime soon. However, as I'm purchasing a new laptop I was curious as to if this peticular model would accept any upgrades. The key upgrades I'm interested in are the Harddrive and the memory.

I'm getting the Inspiron 9400 seen in my sig. I probably should have asked before buying it but I'm not overly worried. Essentially I just want it to last me for the next three years (and I believe it will).

In any case, the laptops case seems to be pretty standard across dell's different models. Anyone have any expirence with this and if so, what upgrades can you do?

Yes, you can upgrade the HDD and RAM in the 9400 with no consequences to your warranty. It doesn't void your warranty, but the new hardware won't be covered in your warranty. Basically if you have any problems with your upgraded hardware, you'll be responsible for the damages or repair in most cases. If the problem was caused by an original part, then it will be covered in your warranty.

The upgrades are very easy. To remove the HDD, you remove one screw and pull the HDD out, and put the new one back in. You can call dell and request the XP and software CDs (if you haven't done so already), so you don't have to pay for a new operating system.

Most of us get our memory from newegg because they do have good prices for the 1gb sticks that fit your model. Similar to the HDD, it is easy to remove and upgrade the RAM. All it involves is removing two screws and pulling out the old sticks.

Excellent. I wasn't sure if it would be easy or not to do. Not going to upgrade anytime soon but at least it's availible.

What's the biggest laptop harddrive avalible?

The largest is 160gig 5400RPM by seagate using perpindicular technology. Biggest 7200rpm (fastest) drives are 100gig and made by hitachi and seagate as well as others.

    Seagate also does a 120gig 5400rpm drive.

There are notebooks like the HP dv8000 which support two drives.
