    Hi,

My cousin in India has a gateway laptop and recently because of power fluctuations the power adapter got burnt.
I'm in Canada and have a friend who is leaving for India very soon.
Can you guys suggest what power adapter to buy and from where.
    I saw a Kingston Universal power adapter ~$160 at Futureshop.ca .

    thanks.

You need to know the model number of the Gateway to check the compatibility of the voltage and, most important, the power plug. $160 does seem expensive for a replacement PSU, even if it is "universal".

Look also for Targus, APC, Igo Juice among the bigger names. But can't your cousin find a replacement universal PSU in India? - it will probably be about 1/4 of the price. If they are available but won't fit then you may find that you need a special plug tip for any big name "universal" unit.

And also buy some form of surge protection.

Universal adapter is acceptable as long as it has same ampere and voltage rating. Of course don't forget the DC Jack must be compatible as well :p
