I'm looking to get a smaller, travel PSU for my Clevo P150EM (3630QM, 7970m) and in order to decide what size PSU will work I've been doing some testing with my KillAWatt to see how much draw the laptop pulls in different situations. The tests were done with a monitor attached (which it wouldn't be on the go), though I don't imagine that adds a significant (or any) additional draw on the PSU.

So far, for non-gaming, I'm rarely seeing it pull over 50w.

While gaming (in this case, heavily modded Skyrim) I'm pulling just slightly less than 150. I think I saw it hit 150 once.

My question is: If I were to use a 150w PSU and the laptop draw were to go over 150, even only by 1w, what would happen? Would the laptop shut off, or would it flip back to the battery in those instances? I'm sure the advice is to always make sure you have enough power whenever using the machine, but I just want to know so I don't make a dumb decision (or, conversely, if I *could* use a smaller, lighter 150w supply).

    Thanks!

If you were to use a 150W adaptor - you would see throttling and/or errors and/or reboots and/or the blue screen of death.

You would need a 100% efficient adaptor to do what you want and that doesn't exist yet.

I would not be using anything smaller than what came with the system.
