    Hello all,

Lately I have been experiencing some strong vibrations on my HDDs on two of my laptops.

In the first I have my Sager (described below in my signature), which has a Crucial M4, and a Momentus XT 500GB. The second laptop is an HDX16t which also has a 500GB Seagate drive.

The vibrations sound like the drives are spinning as fast as they possibly can, but the operations of both laptops are perfectly fine. Temperatures are normal, there are no BSODs or freezes, task manager states that they are not running at 100% speed, device manager tells me that the drivers are up to date and the devices are functioning properly, and finally I performed the SeaTools utility on my Sager, which states that the disks are fine.

    Any ideas?

Well, one definite thing you could try is pull out the XT and see if the vibrations persist.

If it's not the drives, then it must be the fans as that is the only other possible moving part in your laptop.

could it be that the laptops are preparing to take off ? .... i.e. you should start looking for another laptop :D

I finally left Seagete and moved to WD, better IMO. And I've had lots of Seagate disks, starting with the ST-225

and if not that, and not the fans as well, then you probably got Parkinson

I'll try that later and see if it persists.

I'm definitely not replacing my Sager; I brought it with the express intent of keeping it to make it last 5+ years. Most likely I'll replace the HDDs but with the Thai flooding, they're going to be quite expensive.

So I took out my hard drive, and it seems to be the culprit. Has anyone else ever had such experiences? For the majority of it's lifetime, the drives have been silent with little to no vibration. All of a sudden it starts spinning extremely fast, even though the computer is functioning properly.

I'm using the XT in a thin and light for the last year, NP. These have a five year warranty so call Seagate ..or send the worthless things to me. I also have 2 WD 7.2k drives that also make noise when spun up so we can only guess at what yours really sound like?
