Paying $3200 for the Apple brand, when you can buy a better configuration for half that price .

Theyve sorted out some of the niggles that i had with macs xD

The ultra gloss screen on the new macbooks on the 17" model has an anti glare option which i picked; theyve started using hybrid graphics (another problem i had with the previous MBPS, they were on dedicated graphics 100% of the time which caused them to get really hot; theyve started using Lithium Polymer batterys which are pretty sweet

oh yeah the 2.93ghz cpu is nice!! it's.. let me calculate.. 5% faster than your old one?
together with the slower disk and all it will really be much faster and all..

still, have fun with it. everyone buying a mac loves it afterwards, even if it actually hasn't anything the 'old' notebook before hadn't, too :)

that reality distortion cloud has to be really amazing, better than drugs :)

. . (sigh) . . do you have any connection between mind & keyboard when typing this sort of twaddle?

. . or was the idea simply to try to deflate OP's pleasure in posting of his nice new toy?

it's the typical reaction when people run around happy "i bought something apple". all others react in.. oh great.. someone had the need for a status symbol.

but if he's happy with it, then all is fine.

. . there's a world out there where folks earn enough from real work on their MacBook Pro to be able to afford to buy their bloody expensive MacBook Pro: this work typically demands accurate colour representation on high-quality displays & uses Photoshop & allied applications, running efficiently & fast in an optimised OSX environment, in turn running in the optimised hardware environment which is unique to Apple.

. . there's absolutely no comparison between the day-to-day real value represented by the new 17" MBP in this real working world & the cost of some 17" jumble of components, selected for buzzwords by a marketing manager, running games for some teenager inside the steaming insecure pile called Windows.

    . . OK?

accurate colour representation? get a hp 8530w with a REAL professional colour display, calibrated and great for photoshop (even with 64bit to access more memory).
the rest is just marketing bla about the optimized stuff. apple has no unique hardware.

uh oh insecure pile called windows omg now you have a point... more hipe-crying. again, if you want to do real work, get a real notebook. elitebooks from hp fit much more professional nichées than any macbook(pro) ever will. or lenovo (not as pretty, but with dualscreen and wacom integrated options).

if you don't want any comparison to day-to-day real value, here's one: the macbook is not worth it.

You got it all wrong !.

Speaking of accurate color representation, No Macbook or even most notebook PCs for that matter have high gamut displays like S-IPS or PVA LCDs, they are all based on inferior TN panels which only support 6bit colors, 8bit colors are displayed using some advanced dithering techniques, added to this, they also have very limited viewing angles with high amount of color shift. Therefore no professional graphics developer use laptop (Macbook or otherwise) display for color intensive work !. They use external displays for that. If you are referring to the graphics adapter then Macbooks use the same nvidia cards as notebook PCs, so there is no difference there either.

Then you talk about Photoshop performance, did you know that Photoshop CS4 for Windows have 64bit support while Mac version is limited to 32bit? I don’t have any benchmark results but I’m pretty sure CS4 doesn’t run any faster on a Mac.

Finally you say “optimized hardware environment which is unique to Apple” What optimized hardware are you talking about ? Don't you know that Macbooks are now using the same intel hardware as Notebook PCs ?

the 8730w can have a dreamcolor display, that is 8bpp.

my 2710p has no viewing angle limit, and no color shift. it looks better from the side than others from the front.

apple displays i've seen so far are rather crap. but olders where much worse than now (with the every-2nd-line-being darker :)).

i agree with everything else you said phoenixfx.

Theres only the option for 2.66 ghz or 2.93 ghz at the moment though.

And i could swap the harddrives if i feel the need.

And theres a reason why people are happy after theyve bought macs :)

8 hour battery life?! With wifi off and left idle? Does it have a battery the size of a brick?

yup, same as the reason that girls are proud wearing ugly cloth that are hip and modern. if it's trendy and cool and all others wear it, i'm cool, too, if i wear it.

but actually, apple as a 'cool thing' is quite boring. i mean, everyone "wants a mac". if you want to be cool, you should get something else, something that even mac owners, when they see it, would want.

but as long as you ARE happy afterwards, and don't realize how you get fooled into stuff that doesn't matter (built out of a single block uhuh (while it isnt.. there is more than one piece in it.. try to open the screen if it's just one piece.. haha)), then all is fine. i used macs for quite a while, and i'm done with that stuff. nowadays, macs are just good but strange pc's (/notebooks). they lack a useful trackpad and replace it with a hip fancy thing that has less functionality for simple fast use than an ordinary one, and replace all their cool pro features with uh shiny more and more.

and personally, i think it's ugly. i hope you don't get fingerprints on the glass no-frame frame when you open it. it's difficult to not get them. else you'll clean it at every time you open it, to have it uhh shiny.

    end of rant :)

but seriously, just have fun with it. you deserve to have fun with it, as you payed a lot and hope to get something for it. there's nothing bad with the apple products. there's not that much good in it, but definitely nothing bad.

Pretty much, that would be with wifi off, not using any intense programs and with the screen all the way dim. It looks great except for the $170 fee your going to pay when the battery dies.

Guys,C'on,if this was a WNSIB post,I would agree with you,cos if you are looking for spac. and BBB-from-all-points of view,MBP is not a good choice, and you would be free to !advise! him to get something else. But in this thread OP wants to share his joy, since he/she worked hard to get this no-so-cheap notebook, but no one said "congrats" ...and...he can always return it if he doesn't like something! :)

    P.S.
If you take a look at apple's website,in their statement they say how/in what conditions the battery testing was done :)

P.P.S. you can ask to "move the post" by "report post" feature or by PM-ing a mod :)

Haven't read through it all properly but I think it says the information about conditions and stuff.
