You might be able to get an Athlon 64 mobile in there...but why? Your machine hardly has any RAM, and your drive if it's the original HDD has probably gone kaput. Best not to upgrade this kind of machine.

well if it could be upgraded for 100 or less that is cheaper than 400 for a new laptop because anything 350 or less is probably gonna be a cheap piece of crap. 1gb stick of ram is $20 bucks, $40 2gb of ram. the last AMD laptop i upgraded, i got a dual core for 12 bucks shipped. HDD might not be to bad to replace specially if better one can be had for cheap.

the problem is is did they really use 754 in laptops? i've seen ULV AMD chips with desktop sockets in laptops before. wanted to figure it out with dissembling first but, that seems

it's an asus so if it' breaks good luck finding parts. it also come with a 1366x768 screen and windows 8, with at least 8 you can get startisback. also $250 is still $150 more than 100$

EDIT: that is also in store pick up only. maybe it might help if say this is not for me and for some whom i think doesn't have a lot of money. don't get me wrong for 250 that isn't too shabby at all but, that might be more than they have to spend. i'll have to be sure to find out though they may be willing to make the drive and get a laptop like that but, i don't want to throw out the possibility of an upgrade if they don't have that kind of money to spend.

Flipside, 10 year old HP breaks...where are you going to get parts? There are also a ton of other options, I'm sure you can find D620's for like 100-120...used of course. Heck T60/T61 ThinkPads go for around 100-150.

the 10 year old HP is ten years old parts should be floating around every where. for the past year or two when customers bring in ASUS laptops there is very little out there we can find. in the past few years Asus has gone out of their way to make sure parts aren't readily available so they can force customers to ship in their laptops to repair centers and charge over 100 USD to fix them, and for small stuff too like a broken track pad or something like that. we don't even recommend ASUS laptops any more. also the assembly and design is sub par and they have been switching to integrated graphics even with nvidia.

i just want you to know that about asus. i agree it's not like there aren't other options.

I know all about ASUS, I worked in a tech shop that was an ASP for them. I don't buy ASUS products, but for a normal person who just browses the web and places Facebook games, a 250 dollar machine be it an Acer, HP, Dell, ASUS, for normal usage it doesn't matter.
