I threw in some ram I had laying around into my new ProBook and was shown a 2E3 error when booting. When I chose to continue booting anyways it seemed to work fine and Windows showed the additional memory capacity. From googleing it seems that HP is insisting this needs to use low-voltage memory only but is that the case?

Saw some others have upgraded to regular memory and not had any issues other than the annoying message with each boot. Is there a way to disable this message?

Here is the HP article for reference:

Is it a Haswell ProBook? Then yes, this error makes sense as Haswell needs DDR3-L 1.,35V memory and not the DDR3 1.50V memory... Can you give a bit more info about your probooks specs?

It's a ProBook 450 though the regular DDR3 seems to run just fine. Do I really need to use the DDR3L?

Unfortunately yes. This is a limitation of the hardware. Newer DIMMs are able to switch on the fly like this one.

Don't think it is safe to continue running the laptop with the DDR3 modules.

It should be fine but remember your effectively overvolting the memory controller etc and that could cause issues down the road.. Get DDR3-L memory if you can OP just to be on the safe side..
