    Hi guys

My DVD drive is acting up. It'll read CD-ROM disks ok but it won't read DVD rom disks.

All that happens is the disk sits spinning and the drive makes an whirring noise, presumably where it's spinning up the disk.

Not much help I know but that's all the info I can give at the mo because I don't know what people would want to know.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could advise me on what could be wrong as I've just bought a game and I can't install it :(

Thanks in advance for any help/advice :)

I would open the optical drive, and clean off the drive lens, with a microfibre cloth. That should remove any dust which could be sitting on the lens. Removing the dust, will help keep the index of refraction of the lens, pointing at the disk, how it is supposed to.
Try cleaning the lens, and tell us if it fixed it.

if it's not something as simple as a dirty lens,,, (wipe with microfiber cloth)...

if that doen't fix it then you will most likely have to replace the drive... is it still under warranty?? if not you might check www.geeks.com,, i bought a refurbished NEC 6500A that came with a 1 yr warranty from NEC... almost any NEW drive will only come with a 90 day warranty.... and these slim-line drives have a tendency to fail eventually... sometimes it's the CD laser that fails sometimes its the DVD laser,, other times it's physical (gears break/wear out... just the way it goes.... hard to build SMALL STURDY and CHEAP... so i just looked for the best warranty for under $50...

hope you just need a little cleaning...

Hmm, cleaning, I hope that is all it is. Mind you I have USB DVD drive so it shouldn't be a problem if the drive has died on me, wouldn't be the first part to go either as both the hinges on the monitor have gone, I'm literally holding on by the screws in the monitor casing...

And it's just out of warranty...

It's just rather inconvenient at this moment in time.

PoS Acer Aspire 9302, lucky I'm buying a Vostro in a couple of months...

Ha! I think cleaning is what it needs. I just wiped it over with a tissue, no microfibre cloth to hand unfortunately, but I've just got it to recognise it has the DVD in the drive and it ran the setup program, but then went back to spinning the disk and not really doing anything.

I'm currently ripping the disc using Alcohol 120% so that I at least have an image of the disk I can use, assuming it rips it ok...

Oddly enough Alcohol seems to have ripped the disk ok, but I don't get why it won't run the setup file properly, the drive seems to encounter a problem when reading the DVD but the DVD itself is clean and free of scratches, and the game installed fine from the image of the disk...

I think tomorrow I will buy myself a DVD drive cleaning kit.

Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated :)
