Hey I have a Maxtor Internal Hard Drive 160 GB. I wasnt really being used in my desktop so I took it out and and bought a USB Case. Now the problem I'm facing is that the hard disk works fine, you can send data to your laptop with ease and access it with decent speeds. I cant copy stuff from my laptop to the hard disk. When I start copying the bar shows 2 mins, and after like 10 minutes it becomes like 300 minutes and the thing never copies into the hard disk. I even got the case changed but I'm facing the same problem.

    HELP!!!

    ewwwww,

    BTDTGTTS.

You have to fiddle with the hdd jumper configuration.
    For my 98SE desktop with a USB2 add-in card;

I have a Seagate 160GB, set hdd to master.
An old Maxtor 20GB won't work right unless it's cable select.

YMMV. I've spent time trying to get good answers or a definitive site, ain't found one.

    Same here :D
Yes, you should set it on master not slave or cable select.

But its a USB. How do I set it to master? Do I change it to master with the jumper?
It was working with the old case. With these new cases its giving problems.

If it's a 2.5 inch hard disk you usually can't change the jumpers.

If it's a 3.5 inch or a 5.x inch hard disk you can change the jumpers.

    And http://www.pcguide.com/topic.html

It's difficult to believe it's a jumper problem if the external HDD can be read OK.

My suggestion is to look at the write caching policy. My Computer > Computer Management > Disk Management > Properties > Policies. Make sure this is set to optimise for performance.

This setting also substantially improves the write performance on flash drives, which gets significant now then have GB of capacity. Just remember to use the Safely Remove Hardware to flush the cache.

    Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is nothing to do with the jumper settings
Its a 3.5 inch HDD and it was fine with the old case.
With this new case, which I have replaced 3 times, its giving me these problems.
By the way I tried the jumer settings and they didnt work.
    Its a Basic Disk
